"Mayor's Register of Coloured Persons, 1820-1849." This volume was also called the "Negro Registry" or "Negro Entry Book." The volume contains entries of free persons of color in Lancaster City who were required to register with the Mayor's Office from 1820-1849.

Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.

Description
Letter of introduction from James Buchanan for Michael G. Dale, Esq. of Lancaster City. Buchanan explains that he has known Mr. Dale since he was a boy, and that his father, the Honorable Samuel Dale, is “of the highest respectability and worth.” Mr. Dale has proposed to find residence in the western states and has recently been admitted to the bar to practice law. 28 March 1838.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

Business card identifying Thomas Welsh as Justice of the Peace and as agent for the Commonwealth Fire Insurance Company and the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Card can be dated to between the latter half of 1859 (when he became a Penn Mutual agent) and the first half of 1860 (when he appears to have stopped selling for Commonwealth). As Justice of the Peace, he lists his services as "Collections made and returns promptly remitted. Deeds, Bonds, Mortgages, &c. carefully prepared." Illegible writing (names) on back of card.

Fair condition; photo darkened around the edges, obscuring some of the text at the bottom. The indentations of each letter stamped or printed on the front of the card is still visible. On the backside are several names written illegibly.
