Letter of introduction from James Buchanan for Michael G. Dale, Esq. of Lancaster City. Buchanan explains that he has known Mr. Dale since he was a boy, and that his father, the Honorable Samuel Dale, is “of the highest respectability and worth.” Mr. Dale has proposed to find residence in the western states and has recently been admitted to the bar to practice law. 28 March 1838.

Description
James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948. This scrapbook describes the establishment and grand opening of James Buchanan’s Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The volume contains newspaper articles that tell Wheatland estate’s history and James Buchanan’s life story. Newspaper articles illustrate the excavation and archaeology performed at the estate before May 1948.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The William J. Buch Papers contains photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal letters to and from William J. Buch, also known as Joe. Several letters and items pertain to his likeness to Franklin D. Roosevelt, including correspondence with the White House and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. Other items include documents and photographs of his service in World War I, Lancaster County boxers, and his son's World War II service.
Admin/Biographical History
William "Joe" Buch served in World War I. He founded Buch's Pharmacy at the corner of Charlotte and King Streets in Lancaster, Pa. and later ventured into the sporting goods business. Mr. Buch was known as a Franklin D. Roosevelt double and wrote often to offer support to the President. Mr. Buch was very active in the local and state Democratic Party. He posed as Roosevelt's twin at many political events. More information is available in Folder 17.
"Lancaster's Salute to Barney Ewell." Program of athletic events for Barney Ewell Booster Night. Stumpf Field. A feature event of Pennsylvania Week. Autographed "To 'Joe,' Barney Ewell, Olympic Team 1948." Contains congratulatory messages from local businesses and a summary of his achievements.

Henry Norwood "Barney" Ewell (1918-1996) was born in Harrisburg and lived in Lancaster for most of his life. He won the U.S. junior sprint title in high school and made a name for himself with many other athletic achievements. As a college athlete at Penn State University, Ewell won NCAA titles in 100-meter and 200-meter sprints in 1940 and 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned home to win more national titles in the long jump and earned his B.S. at Penn State.
Ewell, at age 30, finally had his chance to compete with the best athletes in the world at the 1948 Olympic Games which were held in London. He earned a place on the U.S. track team and won a gold medal in the 400-meter relay. He also received silver medals in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.
After the Olympics, Ewell returned to Lancaster. He and his wife, Duella, raised their family on Rockland Street in Lancaster City and later moved to Green Street. The Lancaster City directories list him as an employee of several businesses throughout his lifetime, including Coatesville Steel.

Herr Manufacturing Co. started in 1907. In 1994 the plant was located at 625 Fountain Ave., Lancaster and relocated to 18 Prestige Lane, East Hempfield Twp. The company was purchased by Serta Simmons Bedding in 2003 and then closed in 2018.
H. Westley & Co. had a store at 328 East Market Street, York, PA in 1927.
