This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Pencil notation, upper left corner: "My mother's letter to my father after the Columbia Bridge was burned." Postmarked December 20, 1890, New Orleans, LA. 2-cent oval stamp, upper right corner. Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The William J. Buch Papers contains photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal letters to and from William J. Buch, also known as Joe. Several letters and items pertain to his likeness to Franklin D. Roosevelt, including correspondence with the White House and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. Other items include documents and photographs of his service in World War I, Lancaster County boxers, and his son's World War II service.
Admin/Biographical History
William "Joe" Buch served in World War I. He founded Buch's Pharmacy at the corner of Charlotte and King Streets in Lancaster, Pa. and later ventured into the sporting goods business. Mr. Buch was known as a Franklin D. Roosevelt double and wrote often to offer support to the President. Mr. Buch was very active in the local and state Democratic Party. He posed as Roosevelt's twin at many political events. More information is available in Folder 17.
Photocopy of the Woodward Hill Cemetery deed and a receipt from the Woodward Hill Cemetery Association for the $100 bequest from Charles Schmitt to care for the graves of himself and his wife. Lancaster. Charles Schmitt was the coachman for James Buchanan.

Letter from Col. H. Kyd Douglas to Harriet Lane Johnston recounting his attendance at Buchanan’s inauguration as part of an escort from Franklin & Marshall College and his subsequent graduation with a diploma signed by the President, his presence at the John Brown raid, his wounds and the kindness of Henry E. Johnston, and commanding the brigade which fired the last Confederate shot at Appomattox. Envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet Lane Johnston, Washington, D.C., with 2-cent stamp attached. Written on the envelope: “A beautiful interesting letter from Col. H. Kid Douglas Ans. Feb 14, 97”. Hagerstown, Maryland.
