Done in cross stitch. Background in wheat gold, floral pattern. Repeated every 21'. Edge turned under and lined with green cotton twill. One end is turned under and weighted, other end is folded triangularly and stitched. Brass ring on latter end is 3/4"
Fine linen with a floral pattern. Cutwork scalloped border in gold silk. Violets in gold and violet silk - satin and outline stitch. Hand embroidered. Roughly square in shape.
Remains of green silk at both ends over linen. Backing appears to be natural color linen with an open weave wool decorated with needlepoint floral-design repeated about ten times down length. Red rose/lavender rose/blue violets, with green leaves also shadings of brown.
Yellow earthenware lobe-paneled spittoon decorated with streaked and spattered dark brown manganese under a clear lead glaze. Oval drain hole on side. Underside has impressed maker's name in block letters: "Eagle/ Porcelain Works / Lancaster City, PA / Henry Gast, S.Q. St. "
Shield-shaped matchsafe of 1/8" thick softwood back and a half cup shaped holder for matches attached to bottom with nails. Holder's exterior is coated with remains of black abrasive used for striking matches. Back board is printed with decorative borders and advertising text in black ink: "Compliments of/ Philip Schum, Son & Co.,/ 150 S. Water St., Lancaster./ Well-known Manufacturers of/ Genuine Coverlets,/ Counterpanes, Blankets,/ Carpets, Stocking Yarn, etc." Along left side of back is "Lancaster Dyeing/ Establishment" and along right side is "Dealers in all kinds/ of COAL." Maker's name printed along bottom: "(S)tanford & Gage(?) (I)thaca, N.Y." Hanging hole at top. No finish on wood.

Philip Schum (1814-1880) coverlets date from c. 1856-1880. He expanded to additional merchandise over the years. His family continued the business after his 1880 death.

Holder's exterior is coated with remains of black abrasive used for striking matches. Back board is printed with line borders and advertising text in black ink: "PLAIN HATS FOR PLAIN TRADE A SPECIALTY/ COMPLIMENTS OF/ BRANDT & CO.,/ HATTERS,/ LANCASTER, PA./ W. WINGERT, Manager." At bottom is the maker/s name: "Novelty Sign Works Ithaca, N.Y. " Small hanging hole at top of back board.

Provenance unknown. Item purchased at an auction. The 1886 Directory has a business listing as well as an ad on page 48 3/4. The manager is listed as I. Newton Wingert, boarding at the home of Andrew Wingert (50 S. Duke). The 1890 Directory lists not business and Newton Wingert is listed as the manger at Boas' hat store at 144 N. Quenn.
Keys to Shober Hotel. Set of three related large bronze keys (A, B, C), each with oval handle and heart-shaped cutout. Long hollow barrels shafts are lathe-turned, with decorative turned detail near handle. Each shaft has slight tapering, increasing in diameter from handle to opposite end. Ends have a flat rectangular "tooth" cut and shaped into similar but varying configurations.
Small table mat with floral outline having 6 lobes or scallops and dense 3-D floral beadwork around perimeter. Clear round and tubular beads appear to have a paper substrate underneath. At center of beadwork is a circle of red velvet, 2.75" in diameter. Fringe of clear beadwork composed of strands of overlapping loops. Bottom is covered with a glazed light red fabric. Edges are finished with a white ribbon binding
Worn areas on red velvet, beadwork has heavy soil, dust and some candle wax drippings near one edge. Beaded fringe is detaching from edges. Binding ribbon is dark, soiled and very deteriorated with considerable loss above and some below.
Bisque fired vase with figurine. Unglazed, white bodied ceramic vase with figure. Colored with with pearlescent paint and gold enamel. The bowl of the case is shell like with floiate scrolls on the rim and a rough rock-like component oppposite the figure. The figure is a boy in romantic costume of white shirt, blue waistcoat or vest, pink cravat or tie, salmon breeches, white stockings, gold shoes, and large straw hat with blue bow. On bottom is number 51 in red and number 5 in varnish.
