Note on back of picture: This large stone house was typical of the ones built by the more prosperous farmers and millers of early Lancaster County. It was located on the south side of the Columbia turnpike west of Maple Grove. The building was torn down in 1972 to make way for a fast-food restaurant. Edward Shippen home. Note on bottom of picture: "Lancaster residence -1752- of Edward Shippen - Mayor of Philadelphia 1744; buried in St. James Church-yard, Lancaster, Pa., 1781--His grand-daughter, Mary Shippen Burd, married Peter Grubb II, Ironmaster,Cornwall, Pa., Grand-father of Clement B. Grubb."
