Jacquard woven blanket formed by two layers of intersecting dyed and undyed fabric. It was manufactured, not hand woven, due to the size of the loom required and complexity of punching the cards to form the pattern. Blue base with undyed wool forming a floral design.with starburst and diamond alternating patterns in between. Green fabric tape found on edges. Design is reversed in color on opposite side. Center design is cluster of four rose plants. Border is a foliate vine with blossoms.
Supposedly owned by Harriet Lane when she attended Georgetown Visitation Convent. Unknown how it came to be in donor's possession. Donor's son and daughter-in-law posited that perhaps Charlotte A. Bauer (donor) received it from Mrs. Cynthia Westover Alden, who was a cousin by marriage to John Alden. Mrs. Cynthia W. Alden had many connections in the 1880s and may have received the blanket from Harriet Lane Johnston.

Originally Bailey & Co, the company was founded by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen. It was located at 136 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1840 Joseph’s brother Eli Westcott Bailey, a New York City jeweler and importer hurt financially by the Panic of 1837, came to Philadelphia and entered the firm. The name continued as Bailey & Kitchen. When Joseph died, Eli became the senior partner of Bailey & Co. until he retired in 1867.

Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.

Buckler, secretary of the special committee to consider the proposed agreement between the Harriet Lane Home and Johns Hopkins Hospital to Mary Speer advising of a meeting to discuss the agreement. Swarr describing the restrictions on investment by law of the court; explaining that the court will only approve trust investments in securities that are explicitly enumerated by the legatee; noting that cash is not always in the hands of the executors; assuring him that the executors strive to give the maximum amount possible in the earliest time possible to the heirs of the ex-President; and hoping that they were not prevented from visiting Lancaster on the 5th by the condition of Harriet Lane Johnston’s health. Swarr explaining that he will transmit to Edward Young Buchanan her concerns about the cemetery lots and the railing but without her accompanying remarks; noting that the mistake regarding the railings has been rectified so that the railings and posts are now placed entirely within the borders of the estate lots selected by James Buchanan for his place of interment, and will not include the additional lots jointly purchased; and regretting having to relate the details but wanting her to have all the facts.
