Saxton to accompany him back to New York; hopes she is having a great visit with Misses Mary and Margie; Mr. Stoeckl brought “the Malachites” jewelry to him; and asks her to visit West Point with him, if she is well enough; business is slow just now. Henry to Louisa Anderson giving his itinerary to Annapolis; wants to hear more from the new baby; her picture pleases every and will sent one to; there were parties for those attached to the Academy and a separate one for the town ladies; Miss Mason married Lieut. Lessing; Johnny Randall and his brother-in-law will accompany him to Currituck. Badly water damaged. Envelope with postmark and stamp detached, badly water damaged, addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Annapolis, Maryland, Thursday [29 October 1874]. Date from postmark.

Handwritten letter from James Buchanan to Thomas Welsh informing him that his nomination as Second Lieutenant for gallantry and good conduct as a private volunteer in Mexico has been forwarded by the President to the Senate. Note: President is James K. Polk, Buchanan is Secretary of State.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
Had been in a heavy wooden frame with wood backing. The letter itself shows some staining and is fragile.
