Eichholtz oil on canvas portrait of Catherine Trissler Eichholtz (Mrs. Jacob Eichholtz 1791-1867). Middle-aged woman faces left, wearing a dark brown dress with wide white "collar" draped over shoulders. Has a wide lace edging. Draped over right shoulder, coveriing entire dress sleeve, is a white scarf with ornately floral-embroidered edge. Wearing a large, fancy cap of gold ribbons and lace. Tie strings are ribbon. Right hand covers left hand. Dark background shows no details. Lighter 4-inch wide section runs vertically from mid-point to top of left side. Small parts of a chair peek out at left side.
Inscriptions: Various numbers on frame sides and top. Taped to lower back of foam board back cover is an encapsulated old, faded printed card with #36 followed by "MR. BLOCH(?) / MRS. CHAS. ----- / BRYN MAWR PA / MRS. JACOB (EICHHOLTZ) / CATHERINE T(RISSLER)." Stamped at top center of frame back & stretcher is "The Warwick Galleries / NW Corner 17tth & Locust Sts. / Philadelphia Pa". Handwritten in pencil along top left of stretcher is "Property of Mrs. Chas. Walker, Mermont Plaza, Bryn Mawr".

Relined canvas has patched areas and many inpainted areas, including lips and both sides of hair. Large section along left side from center to top has been repainted.
Frame is good with several paint chips on bead section at both sides, right center and top left. Back of painting is covered with foam board.
Portrait of George Graeff, oil on wood panel. Portly, middle-aged man in profile, facing right. Has long dark hair tied with a ribbon and is wearing a black coat with white shirt and lace jabot. Dark background. Frame is wood veneered with single metal hanging ring at top.
Label on frame back states "Col. Geo. Graeff." A hatter, Graeff (1756-1823) is credited with building Graeff's Tavern on S. Queen St. He was captain of a volunteer company of Lancastrians at the Battle of Long Island during the Revolution. Was County Treasurer from 1787-1802 and the second president of Farmers Bank, after 1814. More info in file; see NOTES.

Notes
John J. Snyder, Jr. reports that on Oct 1, 1818, Eichholtz recorded a portrait of Graeff costing $20. He notes that this may be one of the latest profile portraits on panel done by Eichholtz.
Included in the 1912 Portraiture exhibition held in the Woolworth bldg., listed as #99 on page 25. See copy in file. The painting was owned and loaned to the exhibition by Graeff's great-grandson, Walter C. Hager (1859-1930).
Rebecca Beale includes this painting on page 96, but notes it is unlocated.

Bilingual broadside printed on rag paper, advertising Benjamin Schaum's Hardware store on North Queen St., Lancaster. The ad begins in English with a note of thanks to Schaum's customers for their business. Next are lists of items available for purchase, including bar, rod, hoop and sheet iron, steel "Of every Description and Manufacture", glass, paintes, oil, varnishes, stoves, cedar and pewter wares, grindstones, spikes, nail, and brads. There are also illustrations of additional products, including a plane, anvil, and clamp.
The ad is also printed in German in the bottom quarter of the page, and at the very bottom is the printer's name, William Albright, and the location opposite the Market House, Lancaster.
Heavy creases down the center and across the middle. Some tears at various places along the edges, esp. 3" in from the lower left corner, and 2" up from the lower right corner. Apparent transfer of ink from another printed item visible.

Copper measure of sheet copper with conical body. Beneath applied handle is a keyed seam. Rolled copper base and lip. Applied strap handle, attached with 2 rivets at top, 1 rivet at bottom. Handle terminates with heart form at bottom and two lobes at top. Interior is tinned.
The name "(E)ICHHOLTZ" is stamped onto top of strap handle. "E" of Eichholtz is hidden where handle is attached at top. Interior is coated with tin.
Jacob Eichholtz worked as a coppersmith/tinsmith with his brother George on East King St. until c. 1815, when he began focusing on portrait painting. 1830 Tax Assessment lists him as a portrait painter.
Research by Pat C. Keller at Historical Society of PA in Jacob Eichholtz's daybook, indicates he made measures, not mugs. Notes in file indicate purchase was contingent on results of an effort to x-ray upper handle for evidence of initial unseen letters of stamped name. No indication this was ever done.
Provenance: Sellers Jackie & Vernon Gunnion purchased measure at Conestoga Auction circa March 1986. Jackie reports Don Fennimore of Winterthur knows only two other signed copper pieces -- by Apple and by Schlosser.

Small Vorschrift done for Jacob Stibgen, mounted within a white window mat. Within a thin border writing example, first line begins with enlarged, decorated letters with flowers and bird: "Allein Gott in der Hoh" with ending "Seig Ehr" in tiny letters below "Hoh". Translation: All glory to God on high. Following lines in English, then the alphabet and finally numerals.
Signed at the bottom "Diese Vorschrift gehoret mir Jacob Stibgen febreary (sic) the 10 1817." Translation: This Vorschrift belongs to me..." . Colors are muted: red, brown, dirty yellow and some black. Some notations on reverse of matboard.
Overall light brown age darkening. Several dark brown stains along bottom left and near center, above "20". Quarter inch discoloration at top, left of center. A 3" long slanted line near upper left corner is breaking, has holes and at right end extends a 1" long vertical break from top down. Also some color losses along break. Surface loss of about 1/4" at left border, 1/5" up from bottom.

Printed fraktur taufschein (B&BC in German) for Michael Ruthisill, born Aug. 17, 1808 and baptized Aug. 30, 1808 by Pastor (Gotthilf Henry Ernestus) Muhlenberg at the Lutheran Church in Manheim Township, Lancaster County. Parents were Philip and Susanna (Schreiner) Ruthisill and the sponsors were Michael and Catharina Ruthisill (grandparents?).
Certificate printed by Lancaster printer Benjamin Grimler in 1803. Penwork & decoration attributed to the "Ruffled Tulip Artist" by the Earnests (9-14-98). See object file for info.
Printed on laid paper, fraktur has a large central heart and two smaller hearts at bottom with verses in German in each. Large heart has main text, with blanks filled in by scrivener/artist in red ink. 1/4-inch-wide yellow border around perimeter. Hand-drawn floral motifs surround the large heart: large tulip-like flowers at top and bottom center, flowering vine at sides and smaller flowers above small hearts and within large heart. Colored in red, green and yellow.
The "Ruffled Tulip Artist" was working circa 1799-1813. He drew distinctive ruffles around large and folky tulips and infilled in German on printed three-heart forms, of which seven are known - all birth & baptismal certificates.

Provenance
Donor reports his wife has Rudisill ancestors. He and his wife received this fraktur with instructions to sell the piece upon their demise in order to pay for funeral expenses. The fraktur was never sold, even now that his own wife has died. See genealogy of Rudisill family in file, given by Lisa Garrett, cousin of donor's wife. Lisa says donor died in 1998.
Condition when received: Entire piece buckled, pasted onto brown Kraft paper. Multiple tears and losses, especially at center of right and left sides; tears and small hole at center. Some foxing, general soiling, and water damage to colors in vining at sides. Color smears and fingerprints, esp. at top and bottom floral device. Small tears and curling at most edges.
At present: Conserved, matted and placed in sealed package by Marilyn Kemp Weidner in 1999 for $1,553. Framed by Lancaster Galleries.

Notes
Four other copies of Grimler's printed certificate known, according to Klaus Stopp (The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans Vol. III, p. 128). Three of these were filled out for Warwick Twp. residents;the other for a Manheim Twp. resident. This 1803 print preceded Grimler's partnership with brother Henry which opened in 1804. From 1799-1812, when Lancaster was the seat of State government, the two brothers were employed by the Legislature to do the State printing. Benjamin was elected to the Lower House of the Assembly in 1824 and died in 1832.
See Rudisill genealogy in file, given by Lisa Garrett. It states John Michael Rudisill was born 17 Aug 1808 and died 8 Nov 1843. He married Maria Magdalena Kurtz on 17 May 1829, daughter of Conrad Kurtz and his wife Susanna Barbara Erb.

Flintlock long rifle by Melchoir Fordney has a 44-inch octagonal rifled barrel, 44 caliber, with tooling & brass insets has "M Fordney" on top near lock. Elaborately relief-carved full-length curly maple stock has engraved mounts: side plate (w/ squared ends), trigger guard (few did this), butt plate, muzzle cap and rear ramrod pipes. Cheek side of stock has a silver inlaid double eagle; engraved oval silver plate on top of stock behind lock. Engraved brass patch box with horse head terminal is of the later Lancaster type due to exposed wood between lid and upper & lower plates. Hickory ramrod.
The top of the barrel is signed "M Fordney" in script. The engraved lock is marked "DREPPERD", a lock used by many Lancaster gunmakers. See NOTES.
Trigger and lock rusted. Minor wear on wood and brass. Long crack in stock under barrel has amateur glue repair (seen when ramrod removed).

H.J. Kauffman writes Fordney was 1st listed as a gunmaker on Lancaster Borough's tax lists in 1813 (an 1846 news article states 1811 and gives his genealogy). His shop was in the 5th block of So. Queen where he worked until his tragic death in 1846 at the hands of an axe-wielding neighbor. Fordney created guns in a unique style with old-style carving and engraved patterns that were "cut deeply and profusely," comparable to some of the best in Pa.
Kindig notes Fordney was first listed as a gunmaker on tax list of 1811 in Lancaster. In 1835 he and his wife agreed to separate and in 1839 he sold his home on S. Queen St. While apparently living elsewhere in town in 1846, his death occurred at the hands of a neighbor, John Haggerty, a religious fanatic who was incensed because Fordney was living with a common-law wife. He attacked Fordney outside, then inside, his gun shop, killing him with blows to the head with an axe.
Kindig states Fordney was one of the finest Lancaster gunsmiths, making "distinctive rifles that are particularly outstanding for their engraving." He likely engraved "more extensively" than any other gunmakers during the Golden Age; he was one of a few who engraved the trigger guard. HJ Kauffman notes his wood carving is also exceptional.
This was one of four guns stolen from a wall case Aug. 17, 2000 by workmen in the Masonic Lodge, but later recovered.

Copper Teakettle has large 7-quart round body, domed lid with brass button knob attached to a metal base visible inside. Goose-neck spout. One vertical dove-tailed seam opposite spout, straight seam along top of spout and short seam underneath. Dove-tailed bottom. Arched handle hinged at chordal sector tab bases with three rivets each.
Maker's mark on top center of handle within serrated rectangular reserve: "7 JOHN.GETZ 7"

Copper tea kettle, classic form with gooseneck spout, high dome lid, marked strap handle hinged on "plinth w/ serifs" tab bases. Lid fitted with a crudely fashioned replaced iron or steel mushroom-shaped finial, bent to one side.
Vertical dove-tailed seam on side opposite spout, top seam running length of spout. Dove-tailed bottom.
Tarnished with numerous dents and scratches over body. Two very heavy dents at shoulder, opposite each other and one on bottom. Finial knob bent to one side. Two significant cracks on proper right side at shoulder and one on back.

Large copper teakettle with rounded body, goose-neck spout and hinged handle having a medium arc, mounted on shaped flanges with three rivets. The domed lid has a small brass mushroom knob (replaced). Dovetailed seams on bottom and vertical seam on side opposite spout. Seamed repair to spout tip.
"F. STEINMAN" is stamped on the handle within a reserve.

Notes
When his father died in 1758, John Frederick Steinman, Sr. (1752-1823) moved with his mother to Lititz from his birthplace, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His mother remarried a few years later to John Christophe Heyne, a tinsmith and pewterer from Lancaster. The shop of Heyne and Steinman would become known as Steinman's Hardware Store, the oldest hardware store in America.
