The Welsh Family Scrapbook contains articles from a variety of newspapers, about a variety of subjects. Most are undated, but appear to date from before 1850 through approximately 1890. Many of the articles pertain to Thomas Welsh and his family, but otherwise no overall theme, pattern or thread is discernible. The articles are pasted in a very loose chronological order, with many exceptions. The underlying book itself is David Carpenter's Execution Docket record from 1822-1823, and many pages have not been pasted over. Note: Contains articles and records related to James Buchanan.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The binding is badly deteriorated, and cover material is powdery and disintegrating. Some fraying of pages is visible, but most of inside material is still intact and readable.

Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. The Norwich Aurora - Extra, Norwich, Connecticut. The issue is dedicated to Buchanan's inauguration. It provides an eighteenth century play-by-play of Buchanan's life beginning with the Presidential election, travel from Wheatland to Washington, and his inaugural address. There are other articles of national importance regarding the Missouri Compromise and the Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott case; Kansas; President Pierce; and George Washington. The local news pertains to the upcoming Connecticut state and local elections. Corner of pages 3 and 4 is missing.

Draft of a letter from James Buchanan addressing the inquiry of whether he would be interested in becoming a candidate for nomination of Governor before the approaching Democratic State Convention with the understanding that the Democrats of York County will nominate him at their upcoming County Meeting. Buchanan outlines his reasons for not wanting to run for Governor. 20 July 1848.

Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.

Letter in which James Buchanan replies to Gabriel Hiester’s request for a date to attend to business and/or legal matters in Lancaster, PA. Buchanan describes how he cannot leave Washington until a final disposition shall be made on the tariff, which is a subject of great interest in PA and to the Union. He continues to describe that the Senate may amend the bill and that it will return to the House for concurrence and that he must be present for any votes. 26 April 1828.
