Henry to Louisa Anderson reiterating his concern about her father’s imminent arrival and his disappointment of not being able to be there to help; gives the remainder of his itinerary; vows never to travel again until she is by his side; dislikes Richard Wagner’s music; instructs her to pay Dody’s medical school bills; summaries his travel expenses and that of the family; comments on the falling stock market; will ask Mrs. Robson if Belle can come to them; hopes to see Frank in Nice; and speculates on berths for her father and Miss I to get them home sooner. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J Buchanan Henry, Garden City, Long Island, New York, America stained with some loss, postmark with stamp cut out. Munich, Bavaria.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson acknowledging receipt of her letters and one from Frank; outlines his plans for completing of his tour; comments on his health and plans to take the children on an outing; compares travel on the Danube to that of the Rhine; enjoys the company of a young, well-educated Polish gentlemen who accompanied him on a tour or Vienna, Trieste, and Venice; describes the lavishness of the Gondoliers’ Regatta; comments on receiving her latest letters and on the death of Garfield and the accession of Arthur; and would like to pay Belle’s expenses so that she might visit. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Garden City, Long Island New York America postmark and partial stamp, second stamp of Hotel Grande Bretanga in two large pieces with heavy water damage and note in a later hand: Letters from Mr. Henry during his trip to Europe 1881. Hotel Great Bretagna via Torino, Milan.

Henry to Louisa Anderson expressing his shock of the change in weather from the south of France to the north; relates his time with Frank in Marsailles; recalls his conversation with Mrs. Post of Baltimore in Vienna; wrote to Belle and her mother; tells of his plans in London and will sail next week from Liverpool, either on a fast ship or a slow one; discusses his health and hopes a regular routine at home will help; saw an exposition and hopes to visit Mr. and Mrs. Blake and Anne McAndrew but not Mrs. Minton because his clothes are too shabby. Henry to William Anderson giving general details of the boys’ final examinations at school and their preparations for going to Lake George; received an invitation to Virginia Douglas’ wedding; has bought a house in Brooklyn to be occupied in the fall; hopes to find a suitable person to run it; received a letter from Frank in Bombay; mistaken about the 6 acres and water rights sold for $5000; Mr. Owens wrote William about a property purchase; his stocks have done poorly of late; Mrs. Thomas is visiting but still has health issues; Belle and family are well; Mrs. R. will receive no more money from her husband’s estate and will be in dire financial states; Miss Irving and the little boys are well; Dody is doing better and earning a salary; the family will visit the grave of Loulie; had a very wet and disastrous spring; visited with the Pleasant family and Miss Titus, and sees the Richardsons quite often. folded. Letter from Frank Anderson to J. B. Henry advising to have Jamie keep his application to the Naval Academy on file in case0 someone, probably Bridgman, drops out; if so, Anderson will urge the Secretary to appoint Jamie; is concerned with the way Mr. Kapff has ignored both of them and recommends having a lawyer clear up the matter instead of turning matters over to slow-acting Mr. Greenfield; his baby is better; and Aunt Paulina died with only about a dozen attending the funeral because Mr. [Oothout] put no notice in the paper. Envelope has postmarks with stamp removed addressed to J. Buchanan Henry, Esq., Rising House, Hague-on-Lake George, Warren Co., New York. New York Ave, Washington, D.C.
