Description
One of a pair of Empire side chairs (with 2013.008.21) with yellow upholstered seat and cherry wood frame. Elements of entire frame are flat with rounded fronts. Back uprights have slight cyma curve, surmounted by a long, wide concave tablet. Tablet has low relief foliate carved ends while most of face is covered with a panel of mahogany veneer. Tablet extends beyond back uprights. Horizontal splat at center of back is pierced carved with a central rectangle flanked by half-moon carved shells, and is then supported by paired, loosely scrolled lyre-like "legs" that attach to chair posts. Trapezoid seat. Front legs have a slight cyma curve.

Description
Empire side chair of walnut with yellow upholstered trapezoid seat. Elements of entire frame are flat with rounded fronts. Both front legs and back uprights have slight cyma curve. Scroll-cut and carved wide crest rail with concave shape. It is faced with bookmatched crotch veneer, with kidney-shaped handhold at top center. Outline of two C-scrolls flank hole along top. Paired cyma curves form outline of bottom edge. Rounded ends. Scroll-cut horizontal splat is pierced with low-relief carved confronting C-scrolls at center and scrolling "legs" extending to chair posts. Bowed front seat rail and flattened cabriole front legs.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson commenting on the “small card” he sent ahead of this letter; expresses his utter happiness when thinking of her; Congress reconvened with the Senate moving into its new hall; the capital gets water for the first time via aqueduct; has a rare night off; goes to Judge Campbell’s party while Harriet, Mrs. Craig, and Miss Magraw go to a concert; waxes romantic about a photograph of her; will be in Mr. Scharff’s wedding; comments on her father and mother; and expects a long letter in return and hopes to see her Saturday. Envelope with postmark, stamp, and wax seal almost intact addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson imploring her not to request him to write less often and not to do so herself; refers to her as his guardian spirit since he was orphaned at an early age and reared by relatives; talked with Leila as they strolled on the White House Grounds and talked about her; jokingly implores her not to jump into the Severn after hearing of the engagement of Dr. Harrison; his boat the Savana will be launched soon and he looks forward to sailing with her. Envelope with postmark, stamp, and wax seal intact addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Date from postmark.
