Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson understanding why she will not write letters on Sunday; will accompany Harriet Lane from New York to Philadelphia and return to same day to be at work; could not see her Uncle Peter; was part of an agreeable party arranged by Harriet Lane on the U.S. Revenue cutter H. Lane to West Point; Miss Mason, on the trip, says she is not engaged to Mr. Wright; an old friend Lieut. Saxton to accompany him back to New York; hopes she is having a great visit with Misses Mary and Margie; Mr. Stoeckl brought “the Malachites” jewelry to him; and asks her to visit West Point with him, if she is well enough; business is slow just now. Envelope with stamp removed and New-York postmark addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. 142 Broadway, [New York], NY, Wednesday.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing again for his comments about Mrs. Bright and has apologized to her and hopes she will spread no more rumors; regrets their long separation and hopes to see her soon; asks after the McKims; is thinking of having Lieutenant Saxton as his groomsman and must have Bob Magraw and General Ward at the wedding; Mr. Scharff is much happier after marriage than before and James Buchanan Henry looks forward to the same fate; mentions the Misses McKim, Miss Emily, and Dr. Raines, who has just been granted the ferry lines in Rio, which should result in a tidy fortune for him. Envelope with postmark and stamp addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. 142 Broadway, [New York], NY.

Description
Small painting by Lloyd Mifflin, oil or acrylic on paper, entitled:"Susquehanna R. at Columbia".. Title in pencil script is below painting. "3 -- 5.00" is faintly written above title, perhaps erased. Painting is mounted on a larger paper and the whole matted with window mat in new wood frame. Foam board backing.
Two men in a canoe-like craft depicted on fiver with small islands with trees immediately behind and mountain in distance. Done in warm, muted colors.
