Notes: Bartlett, The literature of the rebellion, no. 1296.; This pamphlett is bound together with numerous other pamphletts in one volume. The pamphletts in the volume were all published separately. This particular pamphlett is a little more than half-way through the volume.

Summary: Writing during the presidential campaign of 1864, an unidentified Pennsylvanian writer speaks of the catastrophic implications of the election of General George McClellan who proposes making peace with the confederacy. The writer believes that a peace would not resolve the basic issue of maintaining the Union. He believes that the tensions that brought on the war would remain and would eventually break the Union apart.

Title: Final draft of Thomas Welsh's South Mountain Battle Report

Description: Handwritten report in a copyist's hand of Welsh's South Mountain Battle Battle Report. Report details the activities of Welsh's 2nd Brigade (Willcox's 1st Division) during the battle of South Mountain. Command consists of Regiments 45th and 100th Pennsylvania, 46th New York, and 8th Michigan. Notes that 45th Pennsylvania "used the bayonet with success" and that the 45th Pennsylvania and 17th Michigan "sustained the brunt of the battle." Note: Except for a few words here and there, this does not appear to be Thomas Welsh’s handwriting; it was probably dictated.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens

Description: Photostatic copy of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens regarding [Caledonia]. Thaddeus received the first communication from his manager that [the Confederates] were led on Tuesday to where the teams were and took all of the horses and mules and even crippled some horses. They took 4,000 pounds of bacon, molasses, contents of the store, $1,000 worth of corn from the mills and other grain, and $4,000 worth of bar iron. On Friday, they burned the furnace, sawmill, two forges and another mill. They kept the office and store room that night and burned them on Saturday. Damage was worse than Thaddeus expected and he doesn't know what the poor families will do; he must provide for their relief. Lancaster.
