Summary
Peter Clinger Hiller was born in Conestoga, PA, and lived there with his wife and four daughters. He was a teacher and farmer. He also sold and repaired organs, bought and sold tobacco, was a clerk in the Internal Revenue office selling cigar stamps along with other duties, wrote deeds for the county Recorder's office, and served as Justice of the Peace. He belonged to several civic organization and had many hobbies.

Little written material remains from these women who reared large families and made homes for them, who measured their lives by the church's standards. This vibrant collection of photographs, however, tells a remarkable story of "girl crowds," courting couples, multi-generational harvest/gardening work parties, high-spirited quilters, purposeful caregivers. Mr Druckemiller was a Captain in Company B of the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The diary details his military duties and movements. His references to the weather and daily activities remind the reader of the hardships endured by armies at that time. His writing is clear and succinct.

Summary
The author entered the Union Army from his home in West Fallowfield Township in Chester County. He served in Northern Virginia, Second Bull Run, Antietam , Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The diary covers September 18, 1861, through July 3, 1863.The book includes some letters from men in his unit who continued service beyond Gettysburg.
This scrapbook discusses many aspects about the Lancaster County Amish community. Several well-known Amish customs are mentioned throughout the newspaper clippings such as Rumspringa, barn raising, marriage season, and education. Other articles contain information about funeral customs, past-time activities, agriculture and other occupations. An article of special interest surrounds two Amish men arrested for religious beliefs.
