“Oh No! I’ll Never Bet,” a humorous poem about the dangers of gambling transcribed from the Niles Intelligencer Democrat newspaper (Niles, Berrien County, Michigan). Transcribed by Thomas Welsh. 4 stanzas, 16 lines. The date of the poem is not identified. Note: Also printed in The Pontiac Weekly Jacksonian, Pontiac, Michigan, 18 December 1840. Not attributed.

Poem, "The Clarion"
Description
Poem, "The Clarion." The first part was transcribed by Thomas Welsh, second part was evidently written by Thomas Welsh. The first eight lines are the first two stanzas from a temperance piece called "The Clarion” that appeared in a number of temperance journals in the early nineteenth century, including the Journal of the American Temperance Union, January 1841 and The Washingtonian (Augusta, Georgia), September 17, 1842. Second part seems to be an original 14 line poem by Welsh; first lines reads "Sweet one, please tell me why art thou so sad." The dates of the poems are not specified.

This collection contains letters written to or received from Gen. William McCaskey and other members of his family, as well as two photographs.
Admin/Biographical History
Gen. William Spencer McCaskey was born near Paradise, Lancaster County, and was the younger brother of noted educator John Piersol McCaskey. At 17 he enlisted in Company F of the 47th Regiment during the Civil War. He reenlisted and saw combat in Kentucky, Tennessee, and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. He mustered out in 1865 as a Captain. He reenlisted again the following year and served all over the United States before retiring as a Major General in 1907. He died in San Francisco in 1914. He was married to Eleanor Garrison, with whom he had six children: Margaret, Hiram, Garrison, Douglas, Charles, and Eleanor.

Pre-printed form on War Department letterhead with the appropriate blanks filled in noting that Thomas Welsh has been appointed as 2nd Lieutenant, 11th Regiment of Infantry, effective December 30, 1847; includes handwritten instructions to report to the Commanding Officer, Fort Columbus, New York, for temporary duty and to report, by letter, to his Commanding Officer, City of Mexico, for assignment. Also includes instructions for accepting assignment through the Adjutant General's office. Signed by William Learned Marcy, Secretary of War.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to Major Van Ness seeking a settlement of accounts upon discharge and a request for three months of extra pay for a leave of absence. Note: Welsh refers to himself as a disabled soldier which along with MG0828 SeriesB F12, shows his concern over facing a return to civilian life with a serious leg wound.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Capt.George Bush to Gen. Edward Hand regarding the desperation of the situation at Sunbury and requesting instructions and supplies. Capt. Bush is lacking men, ammunition, clothing, and other supplies and at the same time has to provide protection for local inhabitants who are facing attacks from indigenous people on the frontier.
