The earliest library in Lancaster, known as the "Juliana Library," was established in 1759, under the name of "The Lancaster Library Company." It was the third subscription library established in Pennsylvania. In 1763 it was chartered, and, out of compliment to Lady Juliana Penn, daughter of the Earl of Pomfret, and wife of Thomas Penn, one of the proprietors of the Province of Pennsylvania, it was called the Juliana Library. The library at one time had about 800 books on its shelves and was fairly prosperous. Its most flourishing period was from 1760 to 1775.

Summary
This book includes accounts of the martyrdom of the apostles and the stories of martyrs from previous centuries. Next to the Bible, the Martyrs' Mirror has historically held the most significant and prominent place in Amish and Mennonite homes. The Martyrs Mirror is still a beloved book among Amish and Mennonites. While less common now in the 20th century, Martyrs' Mirror is a common wedding gift for Amish and Mennonite families. In 1745, Jacob Gottschalk arranged with the Ephrata Cloister to have them translate the Martyrs Mirror from Dutch into German and to print it. The work took 15 men three years to finish and in 1749, at 1,512 pages, it was the largest book printed in America before the Revolutionary War. [wikipedia]

"The object of this work, is to give a brief history of persecution since the first introduction of Christianity, till the present time. In doing this, we have commenced with the martyrdom of Stephen, and following the course of events, have brought the History of persecution down to the year 1830. In all ages, we find that a disposition to persecute for opinion's sake, has been manifested by wicked men, whatever may have been their opinions or sentiments on religious subjects. The intolerant Jew, and the bigoted pagan, have exhibited no more of a persecuting spirit, than the nominal professor of Christianity, and the infidel and the avowed atheist. Indeed, it seems to be an "inherent vice," in unsanctified nature to endeavour by the pressure of physical force, to restrain obnoxious sentiments, and to propagate favourite opinions. It is only when the heart has been renewed and sanctified by divine grace, that men have rightly understood and practised the true principles of toleration. We do not say that none but real Christians have adopted correct views respecting civil and religious liberty;—but we affirm that these views owe their origin entirely to Christianity and its genuine disciples."
