The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Note: This group of six photocopied letters to Rev. Eugene A. Freauf were generously provided by Linden Hall School, which retains the originals.
Letter 1 Letter concerns the bill of Miss Yates in the amount of 8½ cents. No date.
Letter 2 Letter making arrangements to send Miss Hobbs, Miss Dow, and the Misses Laumans for a Saturday appointment. Miss Lane will not be going, but Mr. John Ford, the driver of the carriage, is a careful driver. Wheatland, 26 September 1849.
Letter 3 Letter regretting not attending a musical presentation because of bad weather. Wheatland, 6 March 1850. Letter 4 Letter offering to send a carriage for Miss Theodora, the Misses Laumans, and his niece if they have permission to visit him. Wheatland, 13 August 1850. Letter 5 Letter announcing that Harriet Parker, sister of Miss Hetty, will accompany a pupil for the school. Wheatland, 18 November 1851.
Letter 6 Letter regretting that he cannot attend a function at the school tomorrow because of bad weather and because he has already accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the plank road between Lancaster and Petersburg. Wheatland, 7 December 1851.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. Marble base is doubled, smaller chair on top of larger. Metal band separate them, molded in foliate design. Column is two-toned metal with marble-vein design, slightly tapering. Oil reservoir above is shaped like a top and has eleven sets of crystals hanging from the edge of the reservoir.
Straight pair of brass candlesticks with a spring. Christian Cornelius, a Dutch immigrant silversmith, founded the Cornelius lighting business in 1827, which became Cornelius, Baker, and Company in 1835. ... The firm began by making brass lighting fixtures but later also made zinc fixtures and sculptures. The business was succeeded by Cornelius and Sons and Baker, Arnold and Company in 1869.
Rectangular white marble base. Ornately cast gilded bronze stem enhanced with scroll-shaped leaves, birds, blossoms and snails. An oval-shaped cast brass collar surmounts the stem with flat glass crystal prisms.
Hanging oil lamp that was converted to electricity. 'S' curved links to clear glass smoke dome. Three chains from dome to lamp in shape of spittoon. Connected to band around neck by ornate metal hook. Glass is smoked and etched with daisy-like flowers and berry clusters. Lower metal reservoir round, box-like with pendant finial; formerly held oil, molded on sides with bell shaped flowers and leaves.
Girandole candlesticks featuring an Elizabethen couple; adapted to burn oil by the insertion of a peg lamp, which is a heavy ribbed glass reservoir situated behind the two-part crystal prisms. A glass peg was sized to fit the socket originally meant for a candle.
Width, depth are for base of candlesticks. Diameter given is for opening of globe top. Given height includes glass globe. Height without globe is 15.5'.

Globes missing from two of the three girandoles. Deed of gift credits donors with giving a pair of girandoles. Deed of gift cites girandoles as both having globes.

Round, bowl-like base, rounded lip with curved, open, finger-handle ending in hole in which cone-shaped snuffer fits. Central candle holder, tall with 3 bands of 3 lines around. A vertical cut slot is on one side of the stem that has a curled lever to push the candle up in the stem as it is consumed by the flame.
Brass and glass lamp. Converted to electricity. Marble base is square with brass stem that resembles a column. Lamp globe is frosted with designs in clear glass. Globe is wide at bottom and much narrower at top. Prisms hang from base of globe.
Pair of English Queen Anne brass candlesticks (A & B).
Baluster shaft mounted on wide, square base with gadrooning and stepped edging. Vertical seams on shaft indicate cast parts. Metal pin inside candle cup anchors candle. Metal pin protrudes on underside of 4.625 inch square base.
