Watercolor of Eli K. Mylin farm, mounted in large gilt frame.
Painting is done on a rectangular, heavy sheet of sepia-brown paper with textured surface. Executed in greens, brown, red and white. Immediate foreground shows a railroad stretching from left to right, bordered by wooden fencing. Fields in near foreground lead up to a farmstead in midrange consisting of a stone house at far right encircled by a white picket fence, a large white barn at far left, and various outbuildings located between them. Distant fields rise slightly to form rolling hills with trees and fencing at horizon. Sketchy white clouds are arranged across the sky.
The farm is located directly south of Willow Street, Pequea Twp., Lancaster County and belonged to donor's great-grandfather. Her grandmother, Lillie V. Stehman, grew up there before marrying Isaiah D. Stehman and moving to Mount Joy.
The 1864 Atlas shows E.K. Mylin residing in the extreme southeast corner of Pequea Twp. The 1899 Atlas shows two farms in close proximity, both owned by E. K. Mylin.
Painted in 1913, probably from a photo post card (with a May 1906 postmark) that shows this exact scene.

Overall good condition. Minor buckling across surface with vertical streaks of dark soil across both painting and backing paper. Bother papers have suffered some fading. Frame has much of gliding intact on interior surfaces although worn and soiled but exterior surfaces of frame have been painted over to hid chips and losses. Reverse side of frame has torn and soiled brown paper backing covering two large wood back boards.
A: Watercolor on wove paper of J. Crump Tannery, Marietta, Pa, depicting a panoramic view of the Klumpp Tannery and residence, viewed from Front St. The white 2-story frame house with one-story addition is in the foreground on the left with a man and woman by the front door. The tannery complex with smokestack is on the right, set further back from the street with the tanning operation underway. A man in a small horse-drawn carriage is in the street in the front and a boy chasing 2 chickens is in the yard between the house and tannery. A brick church is in the background center.
John C. Klumpp's Tannery was built by P. Moyer on Locust Street between 2nd St. (now E. Market) and Prospect Alley in 1815. Klumpp acquired the tannery in 1874 and operated it until his death in 1901. The tannery occupied lots 69-70-71-72, Strawberry Alley ran beside the Klumpp residence on the left. To the rear of the dwelling, behind the fence can be the kitchen garden and outhouse.

B: Black and white photo showing roughly the same view as A, although closer to ground level. The house is on the left and the tannery on the right. At least five people are sitting/standing on the porch of the house facing the yard. The buildings appear mostly unchanged from the watercolor. The date "1908" is written in the lower left corner in ink.
C: Black and whit photo of the tannery from the back. Four separate buildings of varying design can be seen in a row, with the smokestack extending up out of frame slightly right of center. A stone bridge over a creek is at extreme right, with creek running around the buildings to the left. The date "1929" is written in the lower left corner in blue ink.
The photographs appear to be photographic copies of the originals. They were attached to the paper backing covering the frame of the watercolor.
A: watercolor has brown staining all over, especially apparent in the sky. Further discoloration along the top edge. The pieces was cleaned (dry and wet), mended, and flattened by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia in 1991.
B,C: Photos. B is browned and faded at the edges and curves inward. Both B and C have tape and backing residue on the reverse. They were dry cleaned, mended and flattened by the CCAJA in 1991. Further details available in file.
Needlework family register, cone in black cross stitch on canvas. A large pink fabric rose is attached to each corner with three smaller roses at the top, all with green fabric leaves and stems. The heading at the top reads "The/Family of/ Noah and Katie Fisher," then lists the names and birthdates of the parents and children (Rachel, Emma, Betsie, Salome, Amos, Susie, and Aaron). At the bottom is the following inscription: "When this you see remember me/Susie Fisher/ 1910", with orange and black diagonal lines above and below the date. The piece is currently in a simple wood frame with gold leaf.

There are small light brown spots over the entire surface. There are a few dead insects in the fabric roses. The gold leaf has chipped away in a few spots.

Description
Umbrella, black silk-cotton canopy, metal ribs and shaft, carved J-shape wooden handle finished with dark stain and glossy varnish. Canopy appears to be a black blend of cotton and silk, having no glossy sheen.
Initials "FUMC" printed in white on applied piece of fabric on the underside of the canopy crown, apparently representing the maker, Follmer, Clogg & Co. (FUMC = Follmer, (Clogg) Umbrella Mfg. Co.) of Lancaster.
Bottom of wooden handle is relief-carved with a heart, inside of which are 4 raised diamonds, separating two sets of 3 leaves. Heart is surrounded by vertically carved 'slices' into the wood.
Black cotton-silk tape secures umbrella when closed, using a metal ring at one end and small black button at other end where sewn to bottom of canopy. (Michael Middleton)

Wear to metal shaft, with paint losses. Shaft tip has wear and corrosion.
Small redware cream pitcher of ovoid form with flared lip; pinched spout and applied strap handle; rust covered with heavy mustard colored mottling on interior of rim and lighter mottling on exterior. "MADE BY BIXLER" hand-printed on bottom in white.
Air raid curtain or black-out curtain, made of black cotton, apparently a sheet that has been adapted for this purpose. Curtain is hemmed all four sides and has an offset (commercially sewn) seam running vertically. Five unevenly-spaced brass rings have been hand-stitched along top to hang a a window for blacking out any light in the house.
Made or purchased for us in the donor's home by her parents, Henry Keiper Long and Helen Hamaker Long. Her father was a member of Civil Defense during WWII; whenever an air raid siren went off, he would exit the house to check that all his neighbors had blacked out their windows to allow no evidence of light. The Longs' air raid curtain was hung over the dressing room window since the family used a weak light within this room only. After the air raid, her father would go off to join other members of the civil defense team to report findings and to drink. This group was headed by director J. Hale Steinman. Donor indicated her belief that the men used these occasions as an excuse to get together with buddies to drink and socialize.
The Long family lived in a house built by Mr. Long at 1431 Hunsecker Road on the eastern edge of Manheim Twp.

Very good condition except for slight wear at crotch with seam somewhat separated.
Baskets pattern quilt made by Amish woman Sarah Stoltzfus (b. 6/17/1923), circa 1939 when she would have been about 16 years old. This pattern is very unusual among the Lancaster Amish.
Pieced wool top blocks on point. Pink baskets of crepe rayon(?) on a field of green alternate with turquoise-blue blocks. Wide border of green and a binding of turquoise blue, turned front to back. Back is a blue cotton print with white dots. Cotton batting.
Hand quilted in black running stitch. Border has vining flowers, tied with a bow in corners. Turquoise blocks have an unusual circle fringed with triangle points and a triple-line cross within dividing it into quadrants. Basket blocks have cable, shell and parallel lines as well as a basket "handle."
Made by Sarah Stoltzfus for herself to go to housekeeping. Her mother chose the pattern from her sister and neighbor Katie Smoker Glick (wife of "Red John" Glick) and also purchased the fabric in stores in Intercourse and New Holland. Sarah's parents were John P. Stoltzfus and Amanda L. Smoker Stoltzfus. Sarah did all the piecing and most of the quilting w/ perhaps some help from her sister.
Note: This quilt is very similar to two other quilts (owned by Trish Herr and Jay & Susan Leary).

Sold by maker in 1988 to Tom Wentzel of Lititz, a dealer, who sold to M. Finkel & Daughter, dealers on Pine St. in Phila. (all transactions occurred in the same year). See 2004 fieldwork notes of Rachel Pellman.
Dovetail construction, wire nails used on interior. Inside is a till and a sliding drawer; shoe molding on all bottom inside corners. Below mid-line molding are two thumbnail-molded, side-by-side drawers with nailed joints and fitted with locks, escutcheons and bail-type brasses in batwing style.
Lid is two joined boards with ends tenoned into end boards and pegged, cutting board fashion. Edge molding is intrinsic, not applied, except for light molding attached to underside to create lip. Lid has strap hinges with fishtail terminals and is fitted with a lock and brass batwing-type escutcheon. Medallion is relief-carved into center of lid top with "18 SF 40." The meaning of this 1840 date is a mystery.
Molding at the base of chest; four ogee bracket feet.

Provenance: One of twelve pieces of furniture transferred to this museum from the Lancaster County Historical Society. These pieces were part of the estate of Sarah Ann Stauffer (1913-1996) whose property, Lime Kiln Farm, was bequeathed to LCHS upon her death in 1996.
Clarke Hess had suggested the chest may have been made for Sarah Ann Frantz and the 1840 date may be her birth year. Often, he says, pieces of furniture were made for a child or heir at the time of the settling of an estate.
Research: Sarah Ann Frantz (sister of Sarah A. Stauffer's gr-grandfather Henry L. Frantz) was born 1835, Grandfather Samuel O. Frantz was born 1861, so this theory is incorrect. (The East Hempfield Twp. farm of Sarah A. Frantz is located on both the 1875 and 1899 Atlases, SW of Rohrerstown and S.O. Frantz is shown nearby on 1899 Atlas.)
Top has large crack through center and many dents, scratches and score marks. Loss at right end of mid--line molding of front. Multiple cracks in sides. Repairs done to feet. Refinished with heavy stain and varnish on lid and all interior surfaces. Original finish on front is heavily alligatored; finish on sides is crackled. Interior surfaces have had paper and textiles adhere to wet varnish. Sliding drawer has crack in bottom.

Bookplate on a page from a Martyrs Mirror, done in the style of Ephrata Cloister with a flowing hand using strong, bold letters. Letters are black with green and orange infill. Bookplate simply reads: "Carl/ Christo/ phel." One flower is at top right and a stylized pot with plant having 3 flowers is at lower left. Page is float-mounted in a window mat with a handmade cherry frame.

Removed from Martyrs Mirror by a previous owner (Evelyn Good) due to water damage to the book which was then discarded. The opposing page was also saved and is mounted in Mylar on reverse side of frame. It carries a ghost image of the bookplate; string from binding is visible.
Acquired with typewritten inscription mounted on back of frame states: "BOOKPLATE MADE FOR CARL CHRISTOPHEL FOR/ HIS COPY OF THE EPHRATA MARTYR'S MIRROR-1748./ WORK OF SISTER ANASTASIA THE PEN-ARTIST OF THE CLOISTER ABC PATTERN BOOK OF LETTERS."
According to Clarke Hess, the penwork is by an unknown Ephrata Cloister artist. Clarke notes that Carl Christophel was a deacon at New Danville Mennonite Church in Conestoga Twp.(now Pequea Twp.) He died in 1767.
In Masonic Lodge Fraktur exhibit for several years. Removed circa 2008.

Dr. Robbins purchased framed pages from Evelyn Yingst Good's sale, Sat., May 11, 1991, lot #152, for $3,800. Evelyn Good was an Ephrata librarian. Valued at $5000, Robbins sold to museum for $2,500, donating the other half. Irene Walsh then reimbursed museum for the $2,500.
Acid burned edges are brown; soiled along outside edges; stains and foxing. Moisture stain at top left. Remains of binding still attached at left. Moisture staining at upper left corner. Two minor tears at top center, with ragged edges overall. Paper losses within black ink.

Three leaves of family record pages of the Long family Bible have penwork by Francis Blum, David C. Hoke and Thomas J.Stevens.
P.94.15.02 A: Printed on the front side only, this page is dominated by a huge gold wedding ring and other symbols of marriage. Entries made in ink script state that William Long and Ella E. Shimp were married in East Petersburg, on March 4, 1900, by A.S. Hottenstein.
P94.15.02 B: Framed page shows both sides. Front side repeats marriage info of William and Ella (E. Shimp) Long, done in pen work of Francis Blum whose name is written at the bottom of the page. Elaborately decorated "W" initial letter of William Long. This oversize letter dominates the page. Blum uses various styles of lettering for remaining entries. Decoration is done in red and black ink as well as watercolor.
The reverse side lists the births of William and Ella Long and their five children (Norman S., Mary Edna, Raymond S., William S., and C. Earl Long). The first 3 names are by Blum, but the last two children's entries are done in different hands; William is done by David C. Hoke and Earl is done by Thomas J. Stevens. Signed at the bottom "David C. Hoke, Lititz, Pa., June 21, 1910".
P94.15.02 C: Front side has heading "DEATHS", reverse has "MEMORANDUM". No entries on either side.
Pages have ragged edges where torn from Bible; overall acid burn with some dark stains and soiling; reverse side of page C has residue and paper loss at bottom left corner and top right corner.
Page B was mounted and framed by Brian Howard in 1996. It shows both sides of page.

P94.15.01 A: This leaf is the record of marriage. Front side has printed scene of marriage ceremony with entries made with ink in cursive handwriting. Isaac Walborn of Mount Hope and Annie W. Shearer of Mastersonville were married at Manheim, PA, July 14, 1900, by M.E. Bachman, "Minister of the Gospel".
Reverse side has the heading "MARRIAGES" over a scene depicting a flower-festooned gondola with bride and groom under canopy. The single entry of Isaac & Annie Walborn's marriage is made by Francis Blum, whose signature appears at bottom right. Penwork is done in red, green, and blue.
P94.15.02 B: This has the record of "BIRTHS" on the front side and "DEATHS" on the reverse. Under the headings are appropriate images: an infant emerging from a large clam shell under "BIRTHS", and an angel kneeling by a grave under "DEATHS". Birth names of the parents and four children (Viola S., Joseph S., Leona May, and Alverta S. Walborn) as well as the heading "Children" are done in calligraphy by David C. Hoke, in colors of red and blue. Entry at the bottom of the page states "David C. Hoke Lititz Pa. Dec. 10 1912"
The reverse side, on "DEATHS" page, exhibits two more names done by the same hand as the front. Hoke has written the names Viola S. Walborn and Joseph S. Walborn in the same calligraphic style as the front. However, the death entries of Annie and Isaac are entered in cursive at a much later date (after 1945).
Note: In Francis Blum exhibit at Muddy Creek Farm Library 2003-2004. "Guest curator" John Parmer's genealogy research is included in this file.
Both leaves have torn edges where removed from the Bible; acid burn & soiling, especially along edges. Page A has food (or other) stains smeared in several places & tape-repaired 1 1/2" tear at bottom. Page B has four small tears along the edges.

Bookcase on desk, Queen Anne, walnut, owned by the Jenkins family of Churchtown area in Caernarvon Twp. Upper section has a scroll pediment with shallow-carved round rosettes with button centers above a plain tympanum. The three turnip finials are replacements. Distinctive chamfered, fluted front corners terminate in lamb's tongues. Two doors have two raised panels and stationary shelves within. Maker is unknown.
Restored straight bracket feet, four lipped graduated drawers with two candle drawers flanking the top drawer. Interior has a central prospect door with tombstone shape and applied outer moldings creating the impression of frame-and-panel construction; center panel has highly figured wood. Flanking manuscript drawers faced with wide fluted columns on plinths with capitals. Each side of central section has four pigeon holes above two tiers of drawers, four each side.
Snyder states most of the brass hardware has been "correctly restored." Inscription on the side of one drawer reads: "David and Martha Jenkins" in script. David Jenkins (1731-1797) was the ironmaster at Windsor Forge near Churchtown.
Snyder notes the distinctive chamfered, fluted corners of this secretary relate to the Old family highboy (P78.76) as well as to a highboy in Winterthur collections originally owned by Christopher Marshall who moved to Lancaster on the eve of the Revolutionary War. In addition, there are similar corners on a George Hoff clock w/ brass face as well as some Reading clocks, and some furniture made by Phila. and Maryland cabinetmakers.

History of ownership is soundly documented, according to Snyder. (See his appraisal in file, pp. 5-6). It passed down within the Jenkins family until sold at public auction in Churchtown from the estate of Miss Mary Irwin, a direct Jenkins descendant. Purchased by Elaine Holden.

Detached family record pages from an English language Bible; one folded sheet of paper having 4 printed pages for marriages, births and deaths. In succession, pages have been filled in by William Henning, the Francis Blum and finally David C. Hoke (per Josh Reeder, expert).
Holy Matrimony page by William Henning (and/or Francis Blum) records marriage of William W. Brenneman and Mattie L. Mann, in Lancaster City on Nov. 15, 1887.
Births page has births of parents and 5 children. All work by Henning or Blum except for last entry (Viola) by David Hoke.
Copper measure of sheet copper with conical body. Beneath applied handle is a keyed seam. Rolled copper base and lip. Applied strap handle, attached with 2 rivets at top, 1 rivet at bottom. Handle terminates with heart form at bottom and two lobes at top. Interior is tinned.
The name "(E)ICHHOLTZ" is stamped onto top of strap handle. "E" of Eichholtz is hidden where handle is attached at top. Interior is coated with tin.
Jacob Eichholtz worked as a coppersmith/tinsmith with his brother George on East King St. until c. 1815, when he began focusing on portrait painting. 1830 Tax Assessment lists him as a portrait painter.
Research by Pat C. Keller at Historical Society of PA in Jacob Eichholtz's daybook, indicates he made measures, not mugs. Notes in file indicate purchase was contingent on results of an effort to x-ray upper handle for evidence of initial unseen letters of stamped name. No indication this was ever done.
Provenance: Sellers Jackie & Vernon Gunnion purchased measure at Conestoga Auction circa March 1986. Jackie reports Don Fennimore of Winterthur knows only two other signed copper pieces -- by Apple and by Schlosser.

Memorial record made by Thomas J. Stevens on heavy tan paper. The unique open-letter style is done in black ink with gold highlights on upper case letters and black inked lower case letters. His lettering is "shaded" by red hash marks above them. Text surrounded by a thin black border line with flowers with long black stems coming out of corners and the center of the sides towards the script. Flowers have red petals and green leaves and the script is accented with gold and green. Border has gold accents at the corners.
The top half of the record begins with, "IN MEMORY/ of/ Our Beloved Parents" and continues with their names and dates as follows: "Benjamin Beiler. Born 26th April, 1830/ Died 6th Jan. 1910. Aged 79 yrs. 8 mos. 9 days./ Mary E. [Esh] Beiler. Born 12th July. 1835./ Died 25th Nov. 1908. Aged 73 yrs. 4 mos. 12 days."
The bottom half of the record is a poem which reads: "God His message sent to call them/ From their Labor here below;/ And we hope to those fair Mansions,/ Where the weary Pilgrims go./ Oh Children dear why do you weep,/ Since we a resting Place have found/ So calm and peaceful we shall sleep/ Beneath our green and mossy mound./ Oh let them sleep on so free from all pain/ Oh make not their sweet Spirits to suffer again;/ They slumber so soundly, Oh let them sleep on;/ Their sickness is ended their troubles are gone./ Gone But not Forgotten."
The signature at the bottom reads: "Thomas J. Stevens./ Lancaster./ Pa./ 22. June 1915."
This is one of two signed pieces done by Stevens. Another large family record is of the Amos and Mattie Lapp family, is undated and is owned by Goshen College's Mennonite Historical Library. Other pieces were done by Stevens for the Amish (several owned by Parmer). See also in HCLC collections, family records in Bibles P94.15.2 and P95.22.1.

Seller purchased at sale of Lydia S. Stoltzfus (Mrs. Isaac F. Stiltzfus), New Holland, the granddaughter of Ben & Mary Beiler. Her father was David E. Beiler (Fisher #7783). Thus, the fraktur appears to have been owned by the son, David E. Beiler, and perhaps commissioned by him.
Paper is darkened, especially around edges. Some light soiling and fingerprints. Minor foxing, especially near top left corner. Some light creasing, especially around edges. Small light colored areas of wear around the periphery. Small hole 1 1/2" below signature. Top edge is worn. Dark brown stain, bottom edge towards right and at top right corner of border. Back has greater areas of wear and soiling with some water stains. Framed in archival materials, Feb. 2000, by Lancaster Galleries.

See object file for bio sketch of Stevens done by seller John (Jack) Parmer. Includes family genealogy of Benjamin Beiler (Fisher Book #7781). He lived 1830-1910 and in 1857 married Mary Esh (1835-1908). Benjamin Beiler was also a gifted artist and did bookplates, etc. Parmer notes that one elderly Amish woman, Lydia S. Stoltzfus Petersheim, recalls Stevens in 1925 as a "little Englishman", walking from farm to farm carrying his wooden artist's case. At this time she was a 9-year-old child and Stevens inscribed her Bible.

Composed of scrolls and very artistic flourishes with some flowered curving stems. Inscribed at bottom is "A Specimen made for my Friend / Henry S. Borneman 1947." Signed at lower right: "Irwin P. Mensch" with "April - 1947" at bottom left corner.

Long vertical tears, top to bottom. Shorter additional tear extends down from top, 2 1/4" from left corner. Soiling on top and bottom; torn and ragged edges.

Sample mounted above reads: "Births" in red ink followed by two entries for Markley family enclosed in decorative borders. Next is "Children" followed by two entries. Toward bottom is a third heading "Deaths" followed by four entries, with the last entry enclosed in a decorative border.
At bottom of mounting board is rectangular business card of heavy-weight tan paper. Printing in black reads, "Jos. H McGlaughlin/ Ornamental Penman./ Family Records, Birth, Baptismal,/ Marriage and Lodge Certificates,/ Neatly and Artistically Written./ Family and Memorial Charts Made to Order./ LEOLA, Lanc. Co., Pa." (See unmounted example G.96.03.02).

Several long tears; rips and ragged edges, esp. top; buckling and wrinkling overall due to glue mounting.
Tankard, lidded barrel form. Copper body with brass handle, shell thumb piece and four bands encircling body. Interior is tinned. Engraved on opposite side from handle, "COMPLIMENTS/ OF/ JOHN G. SCHAUM/ TO/ FRANK J. RIEKER." One of a pair with P00.42.2.
Believed to be a presentation piece given by Schaum in appreciation for all the work he was given in Rieker's brewery. Schaum did copper, tin and sheet iron work and was the son and one-time partner of plumber/ coppersmith John P. Schaum.
