The silversmiths, Bailey & Kitchen was originally Bailey & Co. The company was founded by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen. It was located at 136 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1840 Joseph’s brother Eli Westcott Bailey, a New York City jeweler and importer hurt financially by the Panic of 1837, came to Philadelphia and entered the firm. The name continued as Bailey & Kitchen. When Joseph died, Eli became the senior partner of Bailey & Co. until he retired in 1867, remaining a special partner until 1889.

White porcelain bowl set on a raised foot. Gold motif at center is concentric circles of floral and foliate design; outer ring has 12 elongated flowers radiating outward. Edge has 1/2" wide band of gold that extends to outside. The raised foot is gold. Upper half of outside of bowl painted pink and banded at lower edge with gold.
Although attributed to Feuillet, there is no inscription on bottom. Additional pieces of this set of dishes in collection are 2013.008. Jean-Pierre Feuillet, Decorator (French, 1777-1840). See Notes

Descent within Buchanan and Henry family to Pamela Henry (daughter of Frank Anderson Henry, Buck's youngest son) to Louisa Dent (donor).
About one quarter of bowl's side has been broken out in pieces and repaired with 10 staples at outside cracks. Large edge losses have been filled and painted. Additional hairline cracks on inside, opposite large repair.
All gold decoration is worn, esp. at rim.

Research on E-bay has dealer's statement:
"Feuillet introduced a porcelain decorating studio at the Rue de la Paix, Paris in 1820. The products came chiefly from the Royal Factory Sèvres. His successor was Boyer (1845)."
Another seller writes:
"The Feuillet studio was at 18, Rue de la Paix, advantageously located for the wealthy denizens of the area to come visit and make purchases. The Prince of Conde gave Feuillet his protection, thus assuring a constant flow of high-end clients. Feuillet's design atelier reached its apex in the mid-1820s, lavishly decorating some of the most remarkable plates of the time. The combination of rich paste gilding, saturated border colors and meticulous fruit or floral still life paintings made the factory's output one of the favorite choices, other than Sevres, for purchase by the new French Regime. According to the book "Paris Porcelain" by Regine de Plinval de Guillebon, "Feuillet was one of the best decorators in the Restauration period," (Paris Porcelain, page 244)."
Press-molded pearlware dish with blue transfer printed scene consisting of Colliseum. Pattern name, "Italian Scenery Coliseum," is printed on bottom along with stamp of maker.
Rectangular tray. White porcelain with gold trim, raised pink tray with support openings for a white ink well and a white pounce sander. Scalloped edges form handles on both ends of the raised tray and continues along the oblong tray that held pens. Scalloped edges feature gilded edges on white background bordered by a wide cobalt blue band gilt floral decor. The center of the pen tray is white with a pink, blue and white flower motif.

In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Patty Lane Fayer Eldridge as the donor in September 1963. Mrs. James W. Eldridge was the daughter to Patty Lane Fay and the great niece to Harriet Lane Johnston. Patty Lane Fay was daughter to James Buchanan Lane, the first-born to Jane Buchanan Lane, President James Buchanan's sister.
Silver dome shaped cover. Silver surface decorated with inscribed floral patterns on both sides of the dome. One one side the floral decor also features the inscribed letters JB.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1 Papers of James Buchanan, Series 3 Campaign and Inaugural Materials
Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Series 3 contains documents and ephemera from Buchanan's Presidential campaign, inauguration, and inaugural ball. The items date between 1833 and 1869.
Subseries 1 includes ephemera from the 1856 Presidential campaign and Subseries 2 has ephemera from Buchanan's inauguration and inaugural balls. The materials from James Buchanan's Presidential campaign include portraits of the candidates of the election of 1856, various political cartoons, a Democratic ticket from Virginia with engravings featuring Buchanan, a booklet, the results from the 1856 election, a handout promoting the Democratic ticket, and a song written about the life of James Buchanan set to the Democratic tune of "Poor Old Horse let him die." The inauguration materials include multiple invitations to the Grand National Inauguration Ball, Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper articles and illustrations of certain Inauguration scenes.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. On back, 2 "RWP" seals; + 2 additional seals in ovals. "U.S.A." impressed twice.
Leaded glass. 10 sided bottom. Finger-cut design toward bottom. 10 sided finger-cut shoulder. Neck has 3 beaded rings and flattish lip. Stopper is drop-shaped, pointed at top and is 7 faceted. Body is slightly flared to shoulder.
One of two matching silverplate bases (1b-2b) that are paired with two round Sandwich cut glass salt cellars (1a-2a). The short silver plate bases terminate on four ball feet situated at each corner. The square bases are hollow and each have an opening upon which the glass salt cellars rest. Silver bases have a ribbed shoulder decor rounded up to neck of base. Neck has two bands with slanting lines, repeated around outside of flare.
