"This article discusses the 1809 conviction of Susanna Cox for first-degree murder following the death of her newborn son. It uses sources from history and oral tradition in order to examine the case's long- and short-term ramifications for political and social interpretations of capital punishment within Pennsylvania. I explore the impact one case could have on legal history, the treatment of accused and convicted women, issues of linguistic separation within the courtroom, and changing legislative patterns within the commonwealth. These factors contributed to the case's ongoing impact on regional and ethnic social memory."

"John Piersol McCaskey (1837-1935) was a beloved Lancaster, PA, public school teacher and principal, editor of The Pennsylvania School Journal, mayor of Lancaster, publisher, journalist, and compiler of some of America's first songbooks and textbooks. This biography provides a glimpse into the beginnings of Pennsylvania's public schools, with McCaskey as a pupil, and then the system's evolution, with McCaskey influencing its curriculum and goals. Lancaster's history is interwoven in the text, particularly the Civil War years and McCaskey's mayoral years. The earliest library in Lancaster, known as the "Juliana Library," was established in 1759, under the name of "The Lancaster Library Company." It was the third subscription library established in Pennsylvania. In 1763 it was chartered, and, out of compliment to Lady Juliana Penn, daughter of the Earl of Pomfret, and wife of Thomas Penn, one of the proprietors of the Province of Pennsylvania, it was called the Juliana Library. The library at one time had about 800 books on its shelves and was fairly prosperous. Its most flourishing period was from 1760 to 1775.
