Description: James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 8 Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family), Series 3 contains ephemera, including invitations, broadsides, calling cards, and poems. There are several tickets to various democratic conventions and rallies, calling cards, business cards, invitations to homes as well as to parties and balls, two poems, a World War I speech and a railroad scrip ticket book. The majority of the tickets in this series are for political conventions during the 1860s and 1870s from Baltimore, New York, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, as well as a few with no date or location. Invitations range from business sized cards requesting the recipient's company to printed cards for a ball and New Year's Eve Gala.

Admin/Biographical History: The majority of the items in this series are missing context and relationship with the other items in the collection. There is no clear connection with the items and who they belonged to or how they ended up in the collection. There are a few items that can be examined further, such as a ticket to the Eulogy on John Sergeant by Hon. William M. Meredith at the Musical Fund Hall on April 22, 1853. This eulogy was published as Eulogium on the Character and Services of the Late John Sergeant. The convention ticket in folder 1 labeled "L. Vallandingham" may refer to Louise Vallandingham the wife of Clement Vallandingham who was a states' rights advocate and an outspoken opponent to Abraham Lincoln.

Title: Brinton Family Collection

Description: The Brinton Family Collection contains genealogy, estate records, receipts, school workbooks, correspondence, farm records, tax records, bank records, wedding and funeral announcements, invitations, visiting cards, and postcards.

Admin/Biographical History: The Brintons were a prosperous family, owned farms and mills, and participated in other business ventures. They were of English heritage and members of the Quakers, or Society of Friends. In order to escape religious persecution in England, William Brinton purchased 200 acres in Birmingham Twp., Pennsylvania in 1684. His descendants eventually moved further west to eastern Lancaster County.1; Cyrus Brinton (1830-1917), the fourth of six children, was the son of Samuel and Lydia P. Jackson Brinton. In 1813, Samuel purchased 200 acres of land in Christiana (land that was later bounded by the Christiana Machine Shop on the south, Pine St. on the west, Sadsbury Ave. on the north, and Rte. 41 on the east). The land was not ideal for farming, but the property was picturesque and the farm was successful. Cyrus married Rebecca Whitson and they farmed on his father's property for about ten years. At that time they purchased a farm and mill on the road from Cooperville to the Noble Road. The original woolen mill was later turned into a grist mill, then a creamery. Cyrus and Rebecca had five children: Francis, Thomas Luther, William Haslam, Anne Haslam, and Martha Alice.2; Genealogy:3; Thomas Whitson m. Description: Sheraton/Empire Tabernacle style mirror. Gilt mirror with a flat molded cornice with projecting breaks at the corners and fourteen pendent sphere. Double pilasters have decorative captials, beaded reeds and a rope motif terminating with urn-shaped bases. Frieze has foliate carvings.

Description: Hepplewhite Pembrook Oval Table. Two drop leaves, when opened, are supported by pivoted shaped brackets. End skirts are straight with one containing a full-width drawer. The four slender tapering legs have satinwood inlay at the upper end.

Description: Shaving stand is comprised of a mahogany veneer; the mirror attached to the top has a veneered bull-nose frame supported by ring and vase-turned stiles set into the top with tenons at a backward cant. The skirt has two half-drawers; however, the brass knob drawer-pulls are missing. The stand is supported by four ring and ball turned feet
