Written on back: "This shows Hattie Macurdy and me standing on the steps of the temple which is on the very summit of Tai Shan. The stone tablet to our right is called the "Wu Dzi Bei" or "Tablet without characters". It was placed there in the time of Tsing Shi Huang 221 B. C. How it was ever carried to the top of the mountain is a miracle to me."
Provenance

Written on back: "Taken up near the top of Tai Shan. If the chair bearer had not been so inquisitive, you might have been able to see the wonderful old pine on which I was standing - but you cannot see that magnificent panorama of hill and plain stretching out before me."
