Balloon back walnut chairs with serpentine splat. Louis XV style back is rounded and finger molded with no additional carving. Flaring upholstered seat-black horsehair-with serpentine front with beaded molding at bottom of skirt. Cabriole front legs, rounded, with slightly curved square back legs terminating on flat feet.

The chair was presumed to belong to James Buchanan by the James Buchanan Foundation representatives in 1936 when they bought certain furnishings that were still in the mansion during the Willson-Rettew Estate sale.

Crest of top rail, finger-molded in scalloped shaped. Horizontal splat curved upward, terminating in scroll on each end, thicker at middle. Seat is shield shape, serpentine front. Legs plain cabriole, back legs square and canted. 36.14.3 differs from 36.
Cherry writing desk, front of the desk, 4.25" below the top, has piano hinges that allow the top to converts to a writing surface covered with green felt. When closed, the piece serves as a chest with four progressively larger drawers. Both sides have recessed panels and the chest is supported by four vase and ring-turned legs.
This mirror is mounted in a Cassetta Frame. cassetta frame, a design that has been in use for over 500 years. This Renaissance frame design, which are also called plate frames and box frames (the word cassetta means "small box"), were developed in Italy during the late 15th century. This frame has gilt surface on the inner molding.

Contoured brown satin vest has standing collar of brown velvet with floral motif. Long sleeves have velvet cuffs attached. Center front embellished with velvet. Back flaps have velvet between two sating flaps. 16 hand-finished buttonholes; 13 cicular (5/8") bronze-colored shank/loop buttons with figure and silver-colored crescent moon. Inside, 2 loops of brown fabric tape sewn at underarms. Fully lined. All seam edges hand overcast. There are pockets for 10 stays: 2 each side for bodice darts; 2 either sied of underarm and 2 to contour back.

American Sheraton bookcase has a flat overhanging molded cornice. Upper cabinet enclosed by a pair of glazed doors, each with six oblong panes set in straight molded mullions. Doors flanked at sides and center by narrow plain stiles, hung with butt hinges. The lower cabinet has two raised panel doors flanked at sides and center by narrow plain stiles and hung with butt hinges. The lower cabinet has two center swing raised panel doors that surmounts four bracket feet at the corners.

Notes
Based on the pointed waistline of her bodice, this photograph was likely taken in Washington DC while she was the First Lady and before the year 1860. This style was at the height of fashion in the mid-1850s and quickly disappeared in the year 1860, when the straight waistline came into fashion.
Bowfront mahogany veneer chest of drawers in the Hepplewhite style. Four drawers have progressing depths from the top to the bottom, each with overpressed drawer pulls two per drawer. At the top center of each drawer is a brass escutcheon keyhole. The top of the chest and each drawer are decorated with satin wood inlay. Chest is supported at its base by four french feet which feature a slightly outswept bracket foot combined with a valence skirt.

Bathrobe/Dressing Gown Belonging to James Buchanan
Description
Silk dressing gown/bathrobe that belonged to James Buchanan. The garment is constructed of fabric with designs of brown, tan and orange on a blue background on the long sleeves, collar and front opening.
Cording trim edges the collar, front opening and hems as well as edges of front slash pockets and sleeves.Three pairs of decorative 'frogs' of cording with ties on front are used for closure. There is a separate thick tie belt of woven cording with tassel ends. Links of cording attached to two covered buttons on both sides are belt loops.
The navy blue silk that lines the garment is machine-stitched to the soft fleece lining.

Miss Elizabeth M. Hause of West Chester, PA, daughter of the late Judge J. Frank E. Hause, gave the dressing gown to the Society in Oct. 1940. She included a note penned on Dec. 21, 1920 by Dr. L.T. Bremerman of Downingtown, PA.
"My Dear Judge Hause:
The history of the 'dressing gown' as near as I can glaen, is that it was presented to James Buchanan when he was Minister at the Courth of Saint James, by eith the Chinese of Japanese* Minister.
Prior to his death President Buchanan gave it to Col. J.B.Baker who was related to him. Col. Baker's son J.B. Baker, Jr. gave it to me, and it has always been greatly prized by me. In presenting it to you, on account of its historic relation, to say nothing of the esteem in which I hold your Honor, if you have as much pleasure in its possession as I have in presenting it to you, we are mutually happy. With best wishes and the Compliments of the season, I am,

Lower edge at bottom of right hand sleeve is frayed and torn. (He must have been right-handed since the left lower sleeve shows little damage/wear.) Heavy fraying and wear on the neck edge. Collar is detached from neck edge in back and 10 inches of back center seam is apart, revealing soft fleece lining between outer fabric and navy blue inner lining. Silk separating on lower back lining.

Rectangular top inset with brown/black leather. Molded edge, straight flat sides. Two longer sides have two drawers, each with two round concave areas with small knobs at center. Four legs with bun-and-cylinder turned feet. Legs taper down to feet with two buns terminating on the smaller bun foot.
One of two deep silver plated round coasters with deep sides. Top edge flared and molded bottom. Turned wood surface inside. Bottom ouside has inner cirlce of green woolen fabric. Wooden bottom is lacquered.
Leaded wine glass with round foot, thickens near stem. Stem is wide near foot and tapers to a narrow shaped stem before slightly flaring wide near base of bowl. Eight faceted. Facets extend up to the bowl of the glass and ends in scallops. Body has slightl flare.
Gilded, ogee-molded frame with applied acanthus leaf design at two bottom corners. Top crest heavily molded with applied relief. Two sides have c-scroll with top crest of shield, shell, foliate floral design. Garlands of flowers across with central appled bunch of grapes. Crest curves out and forward.
Porcelain china compote with hand-painted landscape scenary on outer body of the bowl. Acquired by James Buchanan while serving as Secretary of State from then outgoing French Ambassador, Louis Adolphe Aimé Fourier, comte de Bacourt.

Notes
In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Lois Cassatt Thayer as the donor in 1935. Mrs. Thayer was the daughter to Alexander Cassatt and his wife, Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt. Maria Lois Buchanan was the daughter to Rev. Dr. Edward Y. Buchanan, the youngest sibling to President James Buchanan.
Cartouch-shaped top of beige/yellow marble; out-rounded corners, serpentine sides; concave/rounded edge. Valanced skirt, also serpentine with carved medallions, on each of four faces with 'C' and 'S' scrolling and foliate motif. Cock-beaded molding around lower edge of skirt. Pedestal has an urn shape with cock-beaded molding with a round finial. Four incurved, shaped and carved cabriole legs terminate in small scrolled feet with casters.
Marble base is doubled, smaller chair on top of larger. Metal band separate them, molded in foliate design. Column is two-toned metal with marble-vein design, slightly tapering. Oil reservoir above is shaped like a top and has eleven sets of crystals hanging from the edge of the reservoir.
Stove Top hat, black with brim turned up greatly on sides, down front and back. Thin black grograin ribbon above brim. Crown tapers in, then out again slightly. Made by Schultz & Brothers, Lancaster, PA.
The stoneware mug's body is predominantly white surmounted with a wide green band that is outlined with narrow gilt bands. The handle is also white and outlined with similar gilt bands.
