Description
Two printed invitations. First is an invitation for Thomas Welsh to attend a Benefit Ball in Marietta, Lancaster County on January 12, 1848; name of "Mr. Thomas Welch" [sic] handwritten on invitation. Second is an invitation for Miss Nancy Young to attend a Cotillion Party hosted by John Hiestand in York, on December 29, 1848. Both invitations include names of committee members and/or managers. There is a watermark at the bottom of the benefit ball invitation, page 3 "Southwark Co."

Description
Four handwritten invitations.
First is an invitation with raised decorative border from Mrs. Jane Strickler for Thomas Welsh to attend a Friday evening event at Fairview Farm, November 17, 1848.
Second is an invitation from G. G. Claiborne for Lieutenant Welsh to enjoy afternoon coffee on August 21, no year; embossed watermark with crown and "LONDON" upper left corner.
Third is an invitation from Mr. and Mrs. Felix to Thomas Welsh to visit their home on Friday evening, March 16, 1849.
Fourth is an invitation with raised decorative border for Thomas Welsh to attend a pleasure excursion on Monday, May 28, 1849 at the Washington, Hotel. Note: May reference the Washington Hotel, Wrightsville, Pa.

The Welsh Family Scrapbook contains articles from a variety of newspapers, about a variety of subjects. Most are undated, but appear to date from before 1850 through approximately 1890. Many of the articles pertain to Thomas Welsh and his family, but otherwise no overall theme, pattern or thread is discernible. The articles are pasted in a very loose chronological order, with many exceptions. The underlying book itself is David Carpenter's Execution Docket record from 1822-1823, and many pages have not been pasted over. Note: Contains articles and records related to James Buchanan.

Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. A lace-bordered valentine consisting of one stanza, ten lines. The opening lines of the valentine seem to be taken from a valentine poem written by T. Tessier and included in "The Bower of Love or the Compleat Valentine Writer," 1830. Titled, "To Miss Annie Young Feby 14th, 1848." Signed "Columbia, Valentine." Note: Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.

Two handwritten valentines with raised decorative border. First is 1 stanza, 4 lines and signed "Valentine." Verse is similar to that attributed to Dr. Hawkesworth in The New Foundling Hospital for Wit, 1784. Second is 1 stanza, 4 lines and signed "[Peabel]". Since the valentines are in different hands it is probable that they were exchanged between Thomas Welsh and Annie Young. It is unclear how the second one is signed, but perhaps it is a pet name that Thomas had for Annie. Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.
