The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. Handwritten copy evidently written by Thomas Welsh of a certificate signed by the regimental surgeon in support his application for a leave of absence related to the leg wound he received at Buena Vista. Name of surgeon is not in the document.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Resolution acknowledging Thomas Welsh's membership in the Order of United American Mechanics, Susquehanna Council
Description
Handwritten certificate of a resolution honoring Thomas Welsh for his patriotic service in Mexico, "where he has sealed with his blood his devotion to his Country." Resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting of the Susquehanna Council No. 31 of the Order of United American Mechanics. Dated September 16, 1847 and published in the Columbia Spy on September 18, 1847. Framed, in poor condition.
