Oil painting of Mrs. Alexander Hood seated on red chair with draped red curtain behind. Her dark brown hair is parted in the center and she is wearing a white covering with ruffles along sides covering her ears. The two wide sashes/ties hang down to her waist. A dainty lace collar piece, unattached, is around her neck with opening in front. She wears a black dress with gathers from a front vertical seam that ends in a point below her waist. Long sleeve visible on her left arm has two sections of gathers on the upper arm. Her left hand rests on her lap.

Some crackling overall. Some paint rubbed off above wooden edges. Some fine vertical streaks on woman's dress, left elbow. A small spot on right side of painting above red chair. Canvas nailed to stretcher bars in tact.
Framed theorem of stencil-painted fruit on light brown cotton velvet. Painting is a still life of variously colored fruits: melons, peaches, apricots, a half-eaten pear, grapes with leaves, plums and a pomegranate. Composed on a blue-colored base or table. An insect is depicted near bottom center below grapes.
There is no border signature or date. Frame is a flat-profiles with walnut veneer facing.
Provenance
Found in the Slaymaker attic among other framed objects, in very dirty conditions. Unknown maker, but possibly done at a Moravian school such as the one at Lititz. See Slaymakers at Linden Hall on page 147 of Slaymaker history.
Taken to Dottie McCoach for conservation June 1, 1998. Returned Sept. 17, 1998. See report in this file. After treatment the piece is still dark, stained and moisture damaged along the bottom.
Wool work picture of a basket of flowers on a buff cotton background in a frame. A wide range of stitches was use, including satin stitches and French stitches. Brown, lattice-worked basked holds a very full arrangement of variegated flowers in bright hues. Flower types include tulips, carnations, forget-me-nots and a tiger lily. The arrangement also has leaves and branches. The double frame is molded and deep and woolwork is covered by old bubbled glass. The cotton background is stitched to an underlying fabric whit is in turn glued to the cardboard backing.
Inscription on reverse of cardboard backing is faintly printed in pencil:

Bought at sale at Brinton property by Vernon Gunnion. Same as drawing by Susan Brinton (P.96.11.1) 259-A Mascot Rd.
Pole firescreen with mounted sampler by C. Carpenter. Late Federal style firescreen, tripod form, with Hepplewhite legs supporting a tapering, turned pillar with urn and inverted trumpet turning above legs and a ring and button turning below legs. Turned ball-and-ring finial doweled into top.
Sampler is set into a walnut frame (22.75 inches square) and attached to pole by two loops of strap iron screwed to back of frame. Sampler is worked on scrim with polychrome wools. A floral vine border has a spray of flowers inside each corner and a large floral bouquet at center. Underneath central bouquet are three lines: "Wrought by /Christiann Carpenter/ AD 1843."
The outside border of green silk is over 2 inches wide and has a pleated circle of the same silk at each corner. Reverse side is covered by green velvet.

Mrs. Isaac (Hilda) Weaver states she is unable to track down maker. Isaac Weaver's mother was Dorothy Christine Hartman (m. Herbert Bachman Weaver); her father was Isaac Carpenter Hartman; his parents were John Ives Hartman and his first wife Anna Weidler; and Ann's father was Dr. Isaac C. Weidler of Upper Leacock. Mrs. Weaver surmises the Dr. Weidler's middle name was Carpenter.
Given in memory of Dorothy Hartman Weaver, mother of donor.
Top of standard has repaired break (plugged hole at back). Scarring and screw holes along shaft. Legs reglued with nail heads visible near top of each as well as glue residue at joints and under turned bottom.
Sampler is generally good; scrim is puckered overall as is silk border. Marked moisture stains at top right and bottom center. Dark soil/stains in area of inscription.
Framed miniature portrait of Major Charles M. Howell (1814-1903) of Philadelphia and Lancaster. Gilded molded wooden frame. Image of man with brown hair in Columbia Fire Company uniform, includes large hat with eagle emblem. Image measures 2 /14" in width by 3" in length. Overall dimension of frame is 4 1/2" in width and 5 1/4" in length. Hand written note on back reads: "On Ivory / artist unknown / Miniature of / Major Chas M. Howell / in uniform of the Columbia Hose / Co., of Philadelphia, Pa. of which / he was a member, [he] was / also a charter mem [ber] of the / Fire Association Ins[ur]ance Co. / of Philadelphia which was / composed of all mem / bers of all the Fire Companies in / Phila. in good standing. / Born in Philada Pa. Apr.14, 1814 / Died in Lancaster, Pa. Apr. 10, 1903. / Maj. Howell's father Amo[s] Howell, jr. / was a member of the [Phoenix] Hose Co., of Philadelphia, Pa." Tear on paper.
Woman's cotton lawn headcovering. Crown is two separate pieces of fabric, with additional small pieces at the lower front corners. Plain ruffle around front and bottom. This pieces was owned and worn by Elizabeth Schneider Mann (1780-1870), the wife of Johannes Mann (1774-1843). She was the great-great grandmother of the donor'ssabalo husband, Rich Hess Mann. Elizabeth Schneider Mann's son, George Snyder Mann, gave the piece to his granddaughter-in-law, Anna Huber Hess, who gave it to her daughter-in-law, the donor Mary Jane Mann.

Woman's headcovering with a 'dotted Swiss' pattern. Netted ruffle around front and bottom. Black silk ribbons attached at bottom front with metal hooks.
This piece was owned and worn by Elizabeth Schneider Mann (1780-1870), the wife of Johannes Mann (1774-1843). She was the great-great-grandmother of the donor's husband, Richard Hess Mann. Elizabeth Schneider Mann's son, George Snyder Mann, gave the piece to his grand-daughter-in-law, Ann Huber Hess, who gave it to her daughter-in-law, the donor, Mary Jane Mann.

Brown stains on both sides and around ruffle. Black silk ribbons are very worn and frayed, especially the one on the proper left side.
Black silk quilted woman's bonnet with large visor attached to small crown at back. Long skirting around nape of neck is not quilted. Bonnet is hand-quilted with a running stitch in two wide outer bands having a zig-zag pattern, and nine narrow inner bands. Cotton batting.
The lining at the back of interior is cotton print of squares in tan, white, blue and plum.
Two black tying strings are pinned to the bottom--one partial tie is sewn on.

Small losses to silk on outside; larger loss on interior silk. Fraying in interior where black silk meets lining.
Copper tea kettle, classic form with gooseneck spout, high dome lid, marked strap handle hinged on "plinth w/ serifs" tab bases. Lid fitted with a crudely fashioned replaced iron or steel mushroom-shaped finial, bent to one side.
Vertical dove-tailed seam on side opposite spout, top seam running length of spout. Dove-tailed bottom.
Tarnished with numerous dents and scratches over body. Two very heavy dents at shoulder, opposite each other and one on bottom. Finial knob bent to one side. Two significant cracks on proper right side at shoulder and one on back.

Very small redware jar, squat ovoid shape with small foot ring and flaring rim. Orange-brown body, decorated with random slanted swaths of dark manganese. Tin glazed inside and out except for bottom 1/5 of exterior and bottom.
Unique inscription: "A Bixler" is impressed on bottom with printer's fraktur typeface.
East Earl Twp. or Brecknock Twp. Attributed to Absalom Bixler (1802-1884).
Large redware pitcher, sectioned octagonal form with conforming low pedestal base. Applied handle and pulled pouring spout. Orange-red color dark brown manganese mottling with clear glaze overall.
Impressed mark on underside is "C GAST" for Conrad Gast (1813- after 1880).

Redware canning jar, ovoid shape with no handle. Pronounced foot ring and rounded flaring lip with recessed interior to receive a fitted lid (missing). Dark brown manganese decoration with some mottling, streaks and dark spatters. Lead glaze overall except for underside.
Very strong wear with losses. Lip has very large chip and one very small chip at outside edge. Strong losses of glaze at lip. Very strong abrasions at salient point of side, with considerable scattered scratches. Foot ring has three large chips and one very large chip. Soil on inside and underside.

Glazed soft paste porcelain Gaudy Dutch teapot (A) with lid (B). Handpainted "Butterfly" pattern decoration on pale blue body of pearlware. Squat ovoid body sits on a low footring; body swells most in lower half. Collar extends outward below an oblong mouth fitted with conforming domed lid with oblong knob finial . Spout has minimal molding as does arching applied handle.

Overall strong staining, especially at lower spout and base section and interior. Strong hairline cracks throughout base and bottom, with resulting staining. Scratchon butterfly wing. Chip on underside of spout tip. Long split/crack on handle back, perhaps from firing. Coloring is very uneven at multiple places, sometimes creating a mottled effect. Wear and soil under foot ring.

Glazed soft paste porcelain Gaudy Welsh sugar bowl (A) with lid (B). Handpainted inverted tulips of red and yellow are interspersed with 3 large, dominating deep blue scalloped motifs decorated with copper lustre painted floral decoration. Squat pot-bellied body sits on a low squarish pedestal with scalloped edging. Two molded angular applied handles. Top has round mouth with flared collar extends outward. Domed lid has squarish molded knob finial. Darkened remnant of paper sticker with blurred writing, perhaps "-caster/ --ea set/ --1825."

Profile of man in a high collar uniform, believed to be Napoleon Bonaparte, cast in chalkware as a framed representation under glass. Rectangular frame has conforming recessed area with cast profile in relief. Old glazing on frame covers image. Chalkware frame is painted dark green with a wire hanging ring imbedded at top center. Profile has black-painted, forward-swept hair with sideburns and pink-rouged cheek. Uniform is of red and black with high red collar and gold epaulette. Created as a memento and sold likely via peddler.
Inscriptions on back in pencil are faint. It appears to be "John M. Snavely/ picked April the 19/ A.D. 1863/ John S(nave)ly." Research reveals a John M. Snavely born 12/17/1843 and died 9/22/1883. 1880 census records him living at home with his farmer parents, Michael and Fannie, and working as a laborer. Obit notes funeral held at Denlinger's Mennonite Meeting House.
Interior profile appears in good condition due to glazing. Outside frame suffers the most with extensive paint loss and significant wear to frame corners. Strong soil on back and other unpainted area.

Figure of a woman with brown hair wearing an ochre broad-rimmed hat, long-sleeved, full-skirted dress painted blue-green with ochre trim on bodice only, and unpainted pantaloons with black shoes. She is also holding a hankerchief in her right hand and flowers in her left hand. Square plinth with clipped corners is lightly dabbed with tannish-brown. Back side is inpainted.
Inscription inside base is pencilled "PRC".

Extensive craquelure. Raised stretcher line. Sagging canvas top left and left side. Scattered dark spots across right 2/3. Frame: good overall with worn gilding and inpainting and soil. Minor chips at outside edges. Back uncovered. Mortise and tenon stretcher with keys; some missing or replaced. At left bottom miter joint, a strip of gesso crack filler is loose and pressing against canvas.
