Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. From Antietam Creek, Maryland. Letter details the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and his frustration with the credit he feels his brigade deserves going to other units. He expresses thorough disgust with the management of the army and the way the battle was conducted (evidently a reference to General McClellan).

A writ of habeas corpus is a procedure for obtaining a judicial determination of the legality of an individual's custody. This collection includes petitions for writs of habeas corpus and the writs themselves, showing the names of petitioners, persons to be brought to court, nature of dispute or alleged crime, dates of writs and accompanying documents, names of judges, and names of persons that the writs are filed against. Petitioners include indentured servants, Freedom Seekers, free African-Americans, convicted prisoners, those awaiting trial, relatives of prisoners, parties in child custody disputes, and relatives of army recruits and draftees. Handwritten, handwritten on printed forms, and a very few typewritten.

Letter expresses concern for Lillie's recent illness, how much Welsh misses his family, and his eagerness to receive expected items from home. Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp near Fredericksburg regarding George Anne’s health and rumors that they would be going to Harpers Ferry to face the Confederate Army. Also, President Lincoln and Governor Curtin were expected to review the camp. He states that the food rations are getting better with provisions of bread, pork, peas, fresh meat, potatoes and onions. He ends the letter stating that the paymaster would be around to give their pay.

Letter from Samuel [Burn] to John B. Eshleman. Written from somewhere along the Potomac River in Maryland during the Civil War. Describes troop movements, life in camp, and interactions with enslaved persons. With photocopy.
Admin/Biographical History
John B. Eshleman was born 11 February 1839 in West Hempfield Township. He had a common school education and taught in West Hempfield and Columbia for 36 years. In 1880 he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature. He served two terms as a Lancaster County Commissioner beginning in 1893. He was also a justice of the peace. He died 21 June 1906 and is buried at Ironville Methodist Church Cemetery in West Hempfield Twp.
