Skates constructed to steel plate in shape of foot surmounted on a .25-inch-thick blade terminating in a scrolled toe. Skates are identical with no right or left differentiation. One skate has four additional holes in heel. Three leather straps with buckles are riveted to foot plate. Dimension of skates: H: 4.5"; W: 4"; :" 12".
Bottom of each skate's footplate is stamped: "EICHHOLTZ & BRO/LANCASTER, PA."
Box, softwood, dovetail construction, painted dark green with a ghost of floral decoration evident on lid, front and sides. Has hinged lid leading to fitted interior covered with coarse green fabric pasted and tacked to wood and edged with braiding. (Written by Wendall Zercher)
Provenance
Research done by Tom Ryan of L.C.H.S., suggests that according to Lancaster Directories, Eichholtz & Bro. were operating in Lancaster City possible as early as 1858 and at least as late as 1870. Jacob Eichholtz' sons, Robert Lindsay and Henry Clay, were in partnership, listed as gunsmiths by 1863 and cutlery by 1866 until at least 1870.

Skates are largely intact, metal has slight corrosion overall, leather straps are deteriorated with losses (two missing on one skate and one on the other). Box appears to have been repainted and is very soiled. Interior has worn "upholstery" with losses of braiding. Hinges have been repaired and handle is missing.
Copper tea kettle, classic form with gooseneck spout, high dome lid, marked strap handle hinged on "plinth w/ serifs" tab bases. Lid fitted with a crudely fashioned replaced iron or steel mushroom-shaped finial, bent to one side.
Vertical dove-tailed seam on side opposite spout, top seam running length of spout. Dove-tailed bottom.
Tarnished with numerous dents and scratches over body. Two very heavy dents at shoulder, opposite each other and one on bottom. Finial knob bent to one side. Two significant cracks on proper right side at shoulder and one on back.

Copper sculpting/modeling tool hand fashioned to create a flattened, spoon-like handle leading to a rounded shank ending in another flattened end bent at the tip to create a short 1/2" extension bent to nearly a right angle for working in clay or plaster. End is squared off. Crude but effective tool for sculpting bears marks of hammering, especially underside of flattened handle. Used by Lloyd Mifflin. Tool presumed to have been fashioned by Lloyd Mifflin himself from a length of copper. Provenance: Mifflin to the Minnich sisters to the groundskeeper at Norwood to donors.
Redware jar of square body with four sides, each press-molded with the same recessed oval having raised design of C-scrolls, flowers and leaves. Corners of body are chamfered. Round neck supports a wide round mouth with protruding lip. No recess for a lid. Bottom is recessed with an impressed marking: "D. OBER,S./ POTTERY." Dark brown body has lead glaze overall. Three furniture marks on bottom from the firing.
Very small redware jar, squat ovoid shape with small foot ring and flaring rim. Orange-brown body, decorated with random slanted swaths of dark manganese. Tin glazed inside and out except for bottom 1/5 of exterior and bottom.
Unique inscription: "A Bixler" is impressed on bottom with printer's fraktur typeface.
East Earl Twp. or Brecknock Twp. Attributed to Absalom Bixler (1802-1884).
Coffepot (A) and lid (B) of blue transfer-printed pearlware. On a pedestal base is an octagonal pear-shaped body flaring back out at recessed rim. Gooseneck spout with cap at tip. High arching handle of C-scrolls. Domed octagonal lid has an octagonal knop/finial and tiny vent hole.
Transfer decoration is a Chinese scene with people, trees, water and pagoda with bridges. Additional decoration at top and base is a filigree-edged band dominated by 3-leafed vine.
Yellow earthenware lobe-paneled spittoon decorated with streaked and spattered dark brown manganese under a clear lead glaze. Oval drain hole on side. Underside has impressed maker's name in block letters: "Eagle/ Porcelain Works / Lancaster City, PA / Henry Gast, S.Q. St. "
Large redware pitcher, sectioned octagonal form with conforming low pedestal base. Applied handle and pulled pouring spout. Orange-red color dark brown manganese mottling with clear glaze overall.
Impressed mark on underside is "C GAST" for Conrad Gast (1813- after 1880).

Wear at all salient points of the lower body as well as the outside and tip of handle. Two medium chips at opposite sides of lip and several minor chips at spout and sides of lip. Wear at bottom.

Profile of man in a high collar uniform, believed to be Napoleon Bonaparte, cast in chalkware as a framed representation under glass. Rectangular frame has conforming recessed area with cast profile in relief. Old glazing on frame covers image. Chalkware frame is painted dark green with a wire hanging ring imbedded at top center. Profile has black-painted, forward-swept hair with sideburns and pink-rouged cheek. Uniform is of red and black with high red collar and gold epaulette. Created as a memento and sold likely via peddler.
Inscriptions on back in pencil are faint. It appears to be "John M. Snavely/ picked April the 19/ A.D. 1863/ John S(nave)ly." Research reveals a John M. Snavely born 12/17/1843 and died 9/22/1883. 1880 census records him living at home with his farmer parents, Michael and Fannie, and working as a laborer. Obit notes funeral held at Denlinger's Mennonite Meeting House.
Interior profile appears in good condition due to glazing. Outside frame suffers the most with extensive paint loss and significant wear to frame corners. Strong soil on back and other unpainted area.

Figure of a woman with brown hair wearing an ochre broad-rimmed hat, long-sleeved, full-skirted dress painted blue-green with ochre trim on bodice only, and unpainted pantaloons with black shoes. She is also holding a hankerchief in her right hand and flowers in her left hand. Square plinth with clipped corners is lightly dabbed with tannish-brown. Back side is inpainted.
Inscription inside base is pencilled "PRC".

Moderate soiling and paint loss. Small chips throughout; large loss on back right corner of base. Mended break in the left skirt. Several paint splatters on skirt front.

Redware Storage Jar with Image of George Washington and Diana the Huntress
Description
Redware storage jar with molded figures of Washington & Diana. Made by Henry Gast.
Square molded red earthenware storage jar. Overall brown lead glaze with manganese speckling. Chamfered corners and sloping shoulders with short neck and flared rounded rim. Each side of jar has a recessed, arched panel containing figures in relief. Two opposing sides depict Diana the Huntress and other opposing sides portray George Washington labeled at bottom "WASHINGTON." Impressed on underside is "H. GAST. LA."
Crock w/ handle, redware, wheel-turned with applied strap handle.
Bulbous body is about 5" diameter at base and swells upward, curving back in to create a slight shoulder, capped with a thick, nearly vertical lip of about 3/4" high. Very dark brown manganese glaze on interior only.
Stamped "D.SWOPE & SON./ LANCASTER, PA." Father was Daniel (1812-1892) and son was George A. Swope.

Generally sound, but three hairline cracks extend across interior of bottom, two of which extend up the sides for no more than one inch. Several old chips on lip, one is larger and recent (about 2" from handle). Body is very good. Interior glaze has some spalling or chipping, esp. at bottom.

Oil lamp of light tinned sheet iron, painted a dull black. Cylindrical oil reservoir w/ rounded top and bottom has a projecting wick tube and wick. Wire wick pick on chain attached to removable collar around wick. Supported by a cylindrical pillar with an air hole at side near bottom. Lamp rests on a saucer base with gold painted ring decorating edge of raised center. Finger ring soldered to bottom of cup and center pillar. Reservoir is stenciled with gold lettering: "SAML. DAVIS/ PATENTED/ MAY 6th,1856".
Strong paint losses, esp. on rim of saucer base with resultant rusting. Paint losses also on fuel reservoir sides. Structurally sound. Scattered and rust. Bottom worn.

Roughly fashioned polychromed softwood miniature trinket box of rectangular form. Domed lid hollowed out underneath and ends fitted with conforming caps. Wire hinges and wire loop at front with missing tin hasp. Corresponding wire loop for hasp on box front. Box sides constructed of rabbet joints secured by two wood pegs at front and two at back. Beveled bottom board attached with two pegs and extends beyond box sides. Top and four sides each have a floral motif of dark green, cream, ochre and red all on a tan ground. Glossy varnish overall except for bottom and interior. Indecipherable initials painted on bottom.

Possible maker is Peter Brubacher (1816-1898), shoemaker and woodworker in Clay Township.
Trinket chest of dovetail construction, hinged lid, turned feet and polychrome decoration. Bottom secured with square nails. Keyhole at front; key missing. On a burnt orange ground are 5 large decals (4 of fruit and 1 of flowers) and one small decal at front center of spread eagle, shield and banner. Chest sides and top have centered line decoration of 3 concentric rectangles with hollow corners (black, ochre, white). Feet are black. Edge moldings of lid and base painted black with yellow-green double line decoration enclosing leafy scrolling vines. Interior and underside unfinished.
Inked # 00.43.1 on bottom. Two old stickers: "65603" on back and "65625" on bottom.
Attributed to Joseph Lehn (1798-1892). South of Clay, Elizabeth Township.

Tin fluid lamp with weighted base and applied medallion of maker.
Lamp has round pedestal base, cylindrical pillar and bucket-shaped reservoir with a domed top. Reservoir is a lift-out unit which fits into conforming bucket-shaped top. The base of the top section has decorative pierced work.
Metal oval medallion at base of pillar reads: "C.F. REES/PAT.JUNE 12. 66/ MILLERSVILLE/ LANC. Co. PA."

Nine-block floral applique quilt, white cotton front and back. Front is pieced with 9 large blocks 24" square, each having the same large appliqued branching flowers. Surrounding blocks is an outside border of white, 7" wide. Narrow binding has front wrapped around to back. No apparent batting.
Floral appliques have a large red bloom centered on a 3-branch flower with green leaves and red buds terminating each branch. Central bloom has a cutwork center roughly conforming to shape of bloom with additional embellishment. Blooms are solid red cotton; stems and leaves are a green cotton print having tiny yellow dots on a faint grid pattern.
Densely handquilted in white thread. Intricacy & density make it difficult to identify motifs, but they appear to be circles, large sunflowers and other variously sized flowers, floral vining with feathery leaves lining only one side of vine, filfots, scalloping, etc.
Donor's written note states maker was Elizabeth Kraybill (1812-1894). See Notes

Log cabin quilt of wools, composed of 30 blocks five wide and six long. There are two borders: a 4 1/4"-wide outer border of four 1"- wide strips and an inner sawtooth 3"- wide border of red and blue. The 30 log cabin blocks are also made of 1" wide strips. All strips have a slight "overhang" along edges which hides the butted seams.
All individual pieces of this quilt are sewn directly to the quilt backing, which is a calico print of tiny green holly-like leaves on black. Consequently, the backing is is also pieced in the shapes of each section of quilt top (squares and two borders). There is no batting and no decorative quilting. The binding is a narrow woven wool tape with a braided appearance.
A small piece of paper stitched to bottom left corner of quilt front, now removed, has an old handwritten note in ink: "(Ade)line W. Kreider/ Cassel/ made this about/ the yr. 1867." The writer of the note was obviously indicating that the quilt was made in preparation for her marriage, while living at her East Hempfield Twp. home. According to the records of Rev. J.J. Strine, Addie W. Kreider, dau. of Jacob G. Kreider of East Hempfield, married John H. Cassel of Penn Twp. on Dec. 19, 1867.

Quilt descended in family homes all located within a few miles of each other, (south of Manheim (Lancaster Junction) to Landisville area).
Once-vibrant colors of the wool are now strongly faded and are thin, fragile fabric. There are strong holes, esp. in outer border; several areas of liquid staining. Binding is deteriorating and detaching with multiple holes. Unfaded area near corner where paper tag removed.
Backing has some holes/tears at corner and numerous slits/holes along edges.

Tulip block quilt of cottons. Blocks are set on point with tulip blocks arranged in 4 columns of 5, alternating with plain white blocks.Tulip design has 3 blooms with 4 petals each. Blooms are a red floral print and stems w/ leaves are a green abstract print.Tulip blocks pieced in 7 patches and stem w/ leaves are applique. White borders are 4.75" wide except for 9.5" bottom. Back is white and wraps edges toward front to form narrow binding. Cotton batting separated.

Hand quilted with white thread following still-visible pencil lines. Outer borders have an undulating feather interspersed with an 8-petal flower. The tulip blocks have horizontal parallel lines and the white blocks have a feather wreath. All quilting has double lines.

Letter of 6/5/1948, in file, from donor's great aunt Nannie (Nancy) Foreman Spangler, states the tulip patches were made by donor's great great great Grandmother Culp, being "at least 150 years old" and that she (Nannie) "had them quilted about sixty years ago" (c.1890?). Trish Herr believes the prints used in the tulip blocks are circa 1840s, confirming the story.
Thus, patches were made by the mother of Mary Culp Atherton (1812-1849), she passed to Mary, then to her daughter Ann Margaret Atherton Foreman (1840-1925) to daughter Nannie Foreman Spangler (1859-1951) who had quilt assembled, to grand niece & donor Margaret Wagner Aungst (1918- 2012).
Generally good with some brown scattered stains and a large stained area at middle of left edge. Apparently rarely washed due to still very visible pencil lines. Many seams in piecing are separating. Backing has acid burn on fold lines and section that was folded and likely touching wood of blanket chest.

Nancy Foreman was the maternal aunt of donor's father, Marshall Wagner. Printout of digital photo taken by Trish of the Foreman sisters is in this file. Aunt Nannie Foreman Spangler is positioned at two o'clock. They were raised in Shippensburg where their father James K. Foreman was Sheriff. Nannie married Henry Spangler & lived in Phila. where Henry was a professor at U. of Penn. They had one child, also Henry.
Donor states the Culp gr gr gr grandmother who pieced the quilt patches is unknown at present, altho she believes descent went from a great great great grandmother Culp to an Atherton to the Foreman family. (Correct - wrz). Donor may have records or photos in storage, but unlikely to discover soon. (Deceased 2012)
