Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
