"A second volume, picking up where Volume I left off, which continues to tell the stories of the men and women from the Cocalico Valley who served their country during WWII, as told by newspaper articles published in The Ephrata Review from May1944 through December 1945. The newspaper articles include letters written home by those in the military, along with articles found in the paper's weekly columns, "What's Cookin' Among Our Boys in the Armed Services," the weekly Denver column, "With Those in the Service," and extracts from community "Personals" and news columns relating to individuals in the military. Also included are articles on those killed and wounded in the service of their country. Each chapter begins with an abbreviated time-line of the War during the period covered by that chapter. Excerpt: "It has recently occurred to me that...the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley has owned the historic Connell Mansion...for fifty-six years. During those fifty-six years little has been written or published about the history of the grand gray-painted three-story brick Italianate home...Who were Moore and Rebecca (Konigmacher) Connell, who built the Italianate mansion in 1868 and whose family occupied it for two generations until 1961?There is absolutely no question in my mind that at the time the Connells built their house it was unique in its rural Lancaster County setting and a showplace in the sleepy farm village of Ephrata."
A good, honest, hard working man : William Christian Paulsen and his family - German immigrants who settled in Lancaster in the mid- to late-nineteenth century
"William Paulsen's story, although unique in its details, is generally typical of the stories of many other middle-class German immigrants in Lancaster. Together, these stories comprise an important part of Lancaster's history that may not be very well known because immigrants in the middle class, although in the great majority, did not leave as many traces in the historical records as did more affluent, well-known immigrants. As a result, the stories of middle-class immigrants are more difficult to piece together. However, in the case of William Paulsen and his family, we are fortunate to have extensive family sources of information to draw on, as well as a substantial number of historical records."
The origins of the "Cabbage Hill" neighborhood of Lancaster,PA, is discussed in this journal article. This area was first settled in the early part of the 18th century and its first neighborhood, Bethelstown, was established in 1762. Bethelstown's role in the development of Cabbage Hill is discussed.

An 1852 lithograph of the city of Lancaster,PA, is lauded for it's exceptional clarity and exactness in it representation of the city. The author discusses some of the buildings shown and also points out the vast open area which would explode into the Cabbage Hill section of Lancaster.

Summary
"In addition to offering a biography of Harry Franklin Stauffer [1896-1982] the journal traces his printing career which began in 1915 when he was employed with Silas Bard's Denver Press. In later years Stauffer operated the print shop of Weaver's Book Store, Lancaster. Following his retirement from Weaver's he established a private press-the "Conestoga Press"- for the purpose of demonstrating the art of printing at the Kutztown Folk Festival. Appendix 1 : Founding members of the High German Church ; Appendix 2 : Members of the High German Church who were arrested for distrubing the peace during the riot on January 17, 1835. Charges were brought by Carl Schaeffer and George Milligsach, elders of the High German Church ; Appendix 3 : Pastors and members of the vestry of Zion Lutheran Church during its peak years in the late nineteenth century.
