Letter from son Joseph to J. B. Henry detailing his duties as surgeon for American soldiers; the climate is fine except for the flies and mosquitoes; the diseases are the same as in Cuba but less severe; Colonel Pettit faced court martial but was acquitted in a strange way for killing an insurecto to protect superiors; the colonel said that James Buchanan Henry met Mrs. Pettit in Switzerland; apologizes for not seeing Jamiet; and asks that James Buchanan Henry use his influence to have the volunteer army commission changed to regular army commission when the present system ends in 1901. Henry relating his travels from China to Europe included comments on the cruelty and violence of the Chinese and the beauty of Hong Kong; asks about Richard Carval, Isabel McDougal, and Miss Alice. Envelope with postmarks and stamp addressed to J. Buchanan Henry, Esq., Hotel Maryland, Annapolis, Maryland, America with water damage. Enclosed in the letter: “Sent in Friendship’s Name a four-page booklet containing good wishes and an image of a sailing vessel. Extreme water damage resulting in running of the blue ink. London.
