The artist signed Florence Taylor 1970 on lower right beside lamp post.

Cross stitch picture in a variety of colors of cotton floss is framed in mahogany-colored wood frame. The stitched 15" x 10.75" outside green border has matching inner border. A purple flower-green leaf chain inside the border frames the entire piece. "1933" is stitched top center, above a curved hanging band of flowers with a blue bow at each end. Stitched in green in the center is "Fame is the scentless sunflower/ With gaudy crown of gold,/ But friendship is the breathing rose/ With sweets in every fold." Black silhouette profiles of a man (left) and a woman(right) in ribboned ovals face each other. Between them is a large bowl of flowers on a surface with curved, cornucopia-like supports ending in flowers. Beneath a green cross-stitch line the name "Mary W. Rettew" is stitched in black upper case letters.
All cross-stitch but for some straight stitches in black on the large flower arrangement at the bottom.

Despite Stevens’ opposition to Freemasonry, the Prince Hall Masons felt a special connection to Stevens. Prince Hall, founder of this branch of Freemasonry, was an abolitionist and leader in the free Black community of eighteenth century Boston. Those who assembled in Lancaster for this particular Grand Conclave assembled, in part, to honor Stevens’ contributions to combating racism and promoting social justice.
An article that appeared in the Intelligencer Journal on Saturday, August 30, 1930 provided an important clue as to why this Grand Conclave chose to honor Stevens. The article included the subheading “Installation of New Officials Marks End of Convention Here” and contained the following text:
John Washington, of Philadelphia, was elected right eminent grand commander of the grand commandery, Knights Templar of Pennsylvania, Prince Hall affiliation, at the annual election of officers that featured the closing of the 98th annual conclave in this city on Friday.
About 250 persons, including Sir Knights and members of the Ladies’ auxiliary, participated in the parade during the afternoon. Stopping at Shreiner’s cemetery, West Chestnut and Mulberry streets, the officers placed two floral wreaths on the grave of Thaddeus Stevens.
Today, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, consists of three subordinate lodges; an Eastern Region based in Philadelphia, a Central Region based in Harrisburg, and a Western Region based in Pittsburgh.

Description
Umbrella, black silk-cotton canopy, metal ribs and shaft, carved J-shape wooden handle finished with dark stain and glossy varnish. Canopy appears to be a black blend of cotton and silk, having no glossy sheen.
Initials "FUMC" printed in white on applied piece of fabric on the underside of the canopy crown, apparently representing the maker, Follmer, Clogg & Co. (FUMC = Follmer, (Clogg) Umbrella Mfg. Co.) of Lancaster.
Bottom of wooden handle is relief-carved with a heart, inside of which are 4 raised diamonds, separating two sets of 3 leaves. Heart is surrounded by vertically carved 'slices' into the wood.
Black cotton-silk tape secures umbrella when closed, using a metal ring at one end and small black button at other end where sewn to bottom of canopy. (Michael Middleton)

Donor is niece of former umbrella hand-carver working for Follmer-Clogg (claims donor). John I. Hartman says the company did not have any carvers as actual employees.
