This encouraged a search for information concerning Mr. Smith's connection with Lancaster, and I take pleasure in present- ing this brief paper to our Lancaster County Historical Society on

was elected United States senator in 1845 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hon. James Buchanan. He served in that position for a number of years. He was secretary of war in President Lincoln's cabinet from March 11th, 1861, to January 11th, 1862, when he resigned. His public services

numerous attempts were made to fly, and that some flights actually were made. One enterprising young gentleman rigged up a sort of ship with a motor- cycle engine, hied himself to Buchanan Park and was able to separate his ship from the ground, which was quite a feat, considering the times and the equip
