Description
Catharine B. Spitler, a resident of Landisville, Pennsylvania, compiled these scrapbooks. Book one contains information primarily about World War II. The newspaper clippings include information about Lancaster natives, both men and women that were involved in World War II, including ranks and location of service. There are also articles about the United States involvement in World War II. Interesting local articles and programs discuss the World War II Memorial in West Hempfield Township. Columbia's Sesquicentennial was documented through a series of newspaper clippings located in this scrapbook.
Book two is a compilation of newspaper clippings, engagement announcements, wedding announcements and obituaries pertaining to Lancastrians. Locations around Lancaster County that were mentioned are as follows: Lancaster, Hempfield, Ephrata, Maytown and Mount Joy. An interesting subject within the second scrapbook is the1972 Flood of Lancaster (Hurricane Agnes).

Three photos of C. Russell Kauffman of Holtwood while stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Kauffman was a Sergeant with the 455th Amphibious Engineers. Digital image only.
Record of applications for peddlers' licenses showing date of application, name of applicant, type of license, and dates granted and lifted. Many applications for soldiers' licenses; these are peddlers' licenses issued to honorably discharged veterans.
Raymond W. High, Abram D. Landis, Merle Kolb and Elmer Zimmerman are near and in the truck that carried supplies to their work sites in the Shenandoah National Park. High and Landis were Mennonites from Lancaster County.
Men in Civilian Public Service camp no. 45 near Luray, Virginia, operating from 1942 to 1946, worked in the Shenandoah National Park on a variety of projects including: wildlife surveys, blister rust control, construction of lookout towers, maintenance of National Park Headquarters, emergency farm work, clearing highways of snow, and firefighting. Ernest Ropp, Titus L. Sensenig and Clarence A. Hurst are pictured working next to the road. Sensenig and Hurst were Mennonites from Lancaster County.
John H. Rudy, a Mennonite of Lancaster County, served for about two years with a Civilian Public Service Camp. He is reading papers from a sruveying project.
