Title: James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948

Description: James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948. This scrapbook describes the establishment and grand opening of James Buchanan’s Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The volume contains newspaper articles that tell Wheatland estate’s history and James Buchanan’s life story. Newspaper articles illustrate the excavation and archaeology performed at the estate before May 1948.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Title: Masonic Order Activities and the Anniversary Celebration of James Buchanan Scrapbook

Description: Masonic Order Activities and the Anniversary Celebration of James Buchanan Scrapbook, No date. This scrapbook contains a considerable amount of information about Freemasons and James Buchanan's involvement as a Freemason. Commemorating James Buchanan's 100th year as a Freemason, the book shows the events surrounding that celebration through newspaper clippings and handwritten notations. An item of special interest is the facsimile of a handwritten letter by James Buchanan from 1816. The volume conveys information about the bicentennial of Templarism in Lancaster County. Bylaws and historic member lists are available for Lancaster and Elizabethtown. Some names mentioned are Marquis de Lafayette, Commodore Thomas MacDonaugh (head of a local Freemason chapter), and Andrew Jackson.

Title: Welsh Family Scrapbook

Description: The Welsh Family Scrapbook contains articles from a variety of newspapers, about a variety of subjects. Most are undated, but appear to date from before 1850 through approximately 1890. Many of the articles pertain to Thomas Welsh and his family, but otherwise no overall theme, pattern or thread is discernible. The articles are pasted in a very loose chronological order, with many exceptions. The underlying book itself is David Carpenter's Execution Docket record from 1822-1823, and many pages have not been pasted over. Note: Contains articles and records related to James Buchanan.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description: Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: St. James Episcopal Church Scrapbook

Description: The Saint James Episcopal Church scrapbook is filled with articles discussing the antiques, stained glass windows, and Stiegel Glass collection at the church. The book is in fragile condition, however a photocopy has been made for viewing purposes.

Admin/Biographical History: Saint James Episcopal Church; Reverend Richard Locke, a missionary from the Church of England, established Saint James' Church in October 1744. Rev. Locke's early services were held at the Lancaster County courthouse, which was located at what is now Penn Square. During 1753, the first church building was built on North Duke Street in Lancaster. However, the church was forced to close in 1776 after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, because of their loyalties to the Church of England. The current building was built in 1820 at 119 North Duke Street, when the Saint James Sunday School opened. The church is currently known as Saint James Episcopal Church.

Description: These scrapbooks commemorate the centennial celebration of the founding of The Church of Our Father, a Unitarian church located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They illustrate the beliefs within the religion and the stance on evolution and science. The volumes contain newspaper clippings, church bulletins, event invitations, and congregation letters, both typed and handwritten. The church was involved in community efforts as well education, lectures and clubs. Some of the Unitarian organizations are also mentioned such as the American Unitarian Association, National League of Unitarian Laymen, Unitarian Laymen's League, and Men's Liberal Club. Prominent people within the church and religion that were mentioned were John B. Day, Rush and Zoë Shippen, Samuel Elliot, and Earl C. Davis. Others mentioned throughout the books were Milton T. Title: "Old Bangor" Episcopal Church, Churchtown, Lancaster County,; Pennsylvania, November 1951 - August 1958

Description: The subject of this scrapbook is Bangor Episcopal Church located in Churchtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It contains information about the Bangor Church graveyard including some names, marker locations and epitaphs from the gravestones. Composed mostly of newspaper clippings, the scrapbook incorporates some handwritten notes to complement the newspaper articles. Within the book, there are several people mentioned associated with the church such as Robert E. Simpson, William F. Worner, Cyrus Jacobs and Hanson B. Jacobs.

Admin/Biographical History: Bangor Episcopal Church, Churchtown, Pennsylvania; Appropriately named "Old Bangor," this church is the oldest non-coastal church in America of Episcopalian denomination. The founding date is a disputed one with oral history dating back to 1722 and written history starting in 1728. With a predominantly Welsh congregation, Bangor Episcopal Church was given a grant and charter in 1730 from William Penn. The church's official charter was created on 1 March 1786, and the church still operates under this charter. The present stone building was completed in 1830. Bishop Ondernack performed the consecration of the present building in 1832. Bangor Churchyard contains 325 tombstones and many unmarked graves. The oldest tombstone is dated 6 July 1741 and is in memory of a young girl, who died at the age of three. There are tombstones in the graveyard from all the wars since the Revolutionary War until World War II. Bangor Church still stands and operates in Churchtown, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Title: Scrapbooks of Francis X. Reuss of Columbia, 1812-1913

Description: The Scrapbooks of Francis X. Reuss of Columbia, 1812-1913 are excellent resources about many aspects of life in Columbia, Pennsylvania during those years. Both books focus on residents of the borough, the history of Columbia, and Chiques Park. In both scrapbooks, there are newspaper clippings, handwritten correspondence, programs, photographs and handwritten notes in the margins (marginalia).; Book 1 contains all of the above materials, as well as maps, sketches and obituaries. Two unique items include a map of Lancaster County dated 1878 and an edition of The Columbia Spy (Vol. 1, no. 21). Fendrich Brothers, a local cigar company, is featured in a few articles throughout the book. With the focus on Columbia, the articles contain many different subjects including churches, the settlement of the borough, disasters, education and schools, prominent people, the dog ordinance, and the centennial of Columbia.; The materials in Book 2 pertain to reunions for former Columbians. Items about the reunion are as follows: menus, invitations, programs, and handwritten correspondence. The newspaper clippings complement the other materials, advertising and discussing the event. The book also has a partial index that includes only some of the subject matter covered and no corresponding page numbers.

Admin/Biographical History: Francis X. Reuss was born on 30 November 1847 in Columbia, Pennsylvania to Edward H. and Anna Barbara Reuss. Reuss began his study of music, piano, organ and vocals in 1857; his formal study ended in 1874. He also studied philosophy from 1863 through 1864. Reuss attend college taking commercial courses and studied Latin, German and French languages for three years.; Reuss was employed as a choir director at several churches in New York between 1870 and 1876, and later joined the Caroline Riehings-Bernard Opera Company with whom he toured throughout the United States, Canada and the West Indies. Upon his return to the states at the end of 1880, Reuss moved back to Lancaster County where he became a choir director at a local church for the next five years. Reuss contributed to the establishment of the American Catholic Historical Society located in Philadelphia in 1884. He chose another career path and started teaching in Philadelphia. Then during 1892, Reuss married Anna S. Fife in Philadelphia. After his marriage, he returned to choir directing at a Philadelphia Church in 1894.; Reuss was actively involved in collecting historical information and stories about residents of Columbia in his later years. He was instrumental in gathering the "Old Columbians" together for annual banquets in Philadelphia.; (prepared by CRB, 2007)

Description: Catharine B. Spitler, a resident of Landisville, Pennsylvania, compiled these scrapbooks. Book one contains information primarily about World War II. The newspaper clippings include information about Lancaster natives, both men and women that were involved in World War II, including ranks and location of service. There are also articles about the United States involvement in World War II. Interesting local articles and programs discuss the World War II Memorial in West Hempfield Township. Columbia's Sesquicentennial was documented through a series of newspaper clippings located in this scrapbook.; Book two is a compilation of newspaper clippings, engagement announcements, wedding announcements and obituaries pertaining to Lancastrians. Locations around Lancaster County that were mentioned are as follows: Lancaster, Hempfield, Ephrata, Maytown and Mount Joy. An interesting subject within the second scrapbook is the1972 Flood of Lancaster (Hurricane Agnes).

Title: Corporate Lancaster

Description: Corporate Lancaster encompasses a large variety of businesses throughout the county. Many of these businesses are power companies including electric, water and coal. Some of the major companies mentioned include Atglen Water Company, Susquehanna Canal Water and Power Company, Pennsylvania Water and Power Company, Lititz Water Works, Edison Electric Illuminating Company, and Holtwood Coal Company. These comprise the majority of the scrapbook, however, many retail, savings and insurance companies are also mentioned. Recognizable names are F. W. Woolworth and Company, City Savings and Trust, Lancaster Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Steinman Hardware Store, and the Hager Store. Information about taxes, population, censuses and stocks are featured in some of the newspaper clippings. Many modes of transportation were written about, such as trolley lines, railroads and canals. The materials available in this book include an account book, newspaper clippings, photographs, advertisements, and postcards.
