Baker cannot go because his wife is ill, and Thomas will be leaving on Tuesday for “the Springs”; looking forward to her visit to Wheatland when he gets back; wondering about Mrs. Ellis’ conduct; and the “young ones” have left for Oxford accompanied by Robert Nevin, with whom Harriet and he “have a good understanding.” Wheatland.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester recounting in humorous terms the romantic adventures of Lily’s father, regretting that she is not in Bedford with the others, pleading with her not to stay too long at West Point lest the President and Gov. Floyd become upset, relating the latest exploits of Mr. Henry, the Major, Gov. Powell, and Gov. Floyd, remembering a fond excursion to Mount Vernon and Mr. Schell’s gift of a stone bracelet to Harriet, returning the packet “money for papers,” the improvement in the health of Uncle, and the death of her pet Nettle. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.
