A humorous tale about a petition in the form of a poem, presented to the Ohio Legislature, by John Smith to change his family name to Sea. Transcribed by Thomas Welsh. The date and source of the story is not identified.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Fair condition. No material tears or fraying. There is a smudge over a portion of the poem, and the heavily-inked title on the reverse side has bled through. This is on the reverse side of TW-A-XX-01(g).

Transcription of a poem by Thomas Welsh and Frederic W. Pangborn
Description
Typed transcription of a poem written by Lieutenant Thomas Welsh on the eve of his departure for the Mexican War. Poem consists of 4 stanzas, 4 lines each. At the bottom of the page is the announcement of the death of Gen. Welsh and the seven lines that Annie Welsh added sometime after the poem first appeared in Harper's Weekly, 2 January 1892. Various notes of and about the Welsh family recorded by Emilie Benson Welsh, wife of Blanton Welsh, as told to her by Mary Young Welsh, sister of Blanton Welsh as they sat on the piazza at 552 Chestnut St., Columbia, Pa. Discusses ancestory of the family, military record of Thomas Welsh, and his horse, "Jerry." Note: The top part of page one appears to be in the hand of Blanton C. Welsh; remainder of writing appears to be in a different hand, presumably that of Emilie Benson Welsh.
