"The Worlds of James Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens examines the political interests, relationships, and practices of two of the era's most prominent politicians as well as the political landscapes they inhabited and informed. Both men called Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, their home, and both were bachelors. During the 1850s, James Buchanan tried to keep the Democratic Party alive as the slavery debate divided his peers and the political system. The 1850s saw in America the breakdown of the Jacksonian party system in the North and the emergence of a new sectional party--the Republicans--that succeeded the Whigs in the nation's two-party system. This monumental work uses demographic, voting, and other statistical analysis as well as the more traditional methods and sources of political history to trace the realignment of American politics in the 1850s and the birth of the Republican party. Gienapp powerfully demonstrates that the organization of the Republican party was a difficult, complex, and lengthy process and explains why, even after an inauspicious beginning, it ultimately became a potent political force. The study also reveals the crucial role of ethnocultural factors in the collapse of the second party system and thoroughly analyzes the struggle between nativism and antislavery for political dominance in the North. The volume concludes with the decisive triumph of the Republican party over the rival American party in the 1856 presidential election. The issue dwarfing all others in the 1848 national elections was the disposition of territory acquired as the result of the Mexican War. Slave and Free states battled to add them to their ranks. Whig campaign pamphlets portrayed their candidate Taylor as anti-slavery in the North and as pro-slavery in the South. His opponent, Democrat Lewis Cass, was portrayed as pro-slavery in the North and anti-slavery in the South. The Democrats proceeded in a like manner. Here, for Northern consumption, Democrats demonstrate Taylor's "Southern face," i.e., his expressed comfort with Southern institutions and opposition to the Wilmot Proviso, barring slavery from the conquered territories.
