Involves bequeaths from her father, James Buchanan, and her mother, Elizabeth Buchanan. Also mentioned in the agreement are her sister, Harriett Henry, and her brother, the Reverend Edward Y. Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane lamenting not seeing the Nevin girls, but had seen their parents, also lamenting the leaving of the new maid, agreeing that Bob’s attention to her was a way to see “her fair cousin,” a union which would “gratify the pride of Annie and her father,” comparing the elaborate consecration of a new bishop to the choosing of the first apostles, wishing that Lily had dropped by before leaving for Europe, wishing that when he called upon Miss. R. she “had flown,” advising to keep secret her visit to Baltimore less the “public papers” learn of it, asking if Charles Macalester had joined the Union League, expressing happiness that Jessie has visited her father, especially of Maria’s account, and urging her to visit Willoughby Webb to sign the request of the wishes of the majority of the heirs not to sell the property below appraisal value. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane.
