A. Toy rifle made of wood and stamped light-gauge nickel-plated metal; may be a functioning dart(?) gun. Hand-carved full-length rifle stock of varnished pine has stamped metal barrel, cap lock assembly and trigger guard. all commercially made. Wire trigger activating inner spring for propelling a projectile is also factory made. Additional metal parts appear to be hand fashioned: metal strap securing barrel to stock and ramrod pipe holding purple wooden ramrod. Sling strap is missing but fittings remain: a small eye screw under rear stock and a light wire fitting 3" back of muzzle. Paper sticker on side of stock has #77.5.8. (North Wall, Unit 2 )
B. Stuffed toy dog with stubby tail. Seated on hind legs. Short floppy ears, plastic bead brown eye, black stitched nose, mouth and paws. Two red stitches for mouth. Dirty overall with lots of fur loss. 6 inches tall. (Box 0479)
C. Stuffed yellow calico dog. Handmade. Tail, hind leg and foreleg. Two long floppy ears. Black beads for eyes. Black thread whiskers and nose. 4 inches high x 6 inches long. Dirty overall. (Box 0479)
D. Owl beanbag. Dark fabric body with gray felt tail, red felt vest, black felt eyes on white felt and black felt beak. Insect holes in vest and white eye-felt. 7 inches long, head to tail. (Box 0479)

Barrel unsecured near muzzle end with some distortion, missing sling strap, warped ramrod, worn/abraded stock, oxidation and yellowing of stamped metal.
Troff, a Steiff original brown floppy-ear dog, sitting on hind legs with head tilted. Brown glossy bead eyes, nose and mouth stitched with black thread. His 'coat' is a fuzzy brown felt. Troff wears a red ribbon collar with a jingle bell attached on the left. On the right is a round tag with: "Steiff original hand made" in the red border and "Troff" in the center.

Stuffed velveteen fabric Mickey Mouse with up-tilted face, black nose, black line mouth. One of eyes has a black disk sewn on (the right eye is missing). Black legs, shirt and head. Tan gloved hands have three lines on outer side. He wears brown shoes and red shorts with two white buttons at front waist. A hand-gathered print skirt is on this toy--fabric is deteriorating.

Notes
In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Lois Cassatt Thayer as the donor in 1935. Mrs. Thayer was the daughter to Alexander Cassatt and his wife, Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt. Maria Lois Buchanan was the daughter to Rev. Dr. Edward Y. Buchanan, the youngest sibling to President James Buchanan.
The stoneware mug's body is predominantly white surmounted with a wide green band that is outlined with narrow gilt bands. The handle is also white and outlined with similar gilt bands.

This frog doorstop serves as an iconic symbol of James Buchanan's attachment to his favorite spring at his Wheatland farm, and was donated because it was an appropriate piece.
Known as a box or lap coffee mill. The iron handle has a wood knob; when turned the handle activates a round burred grinder inside the metal hopper. The ground roasted beans collect in the small wood drawer at the base.
