Thirteen envelopes from James Buchanan addressed to H. B. Swarr, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Two with seals. All have notes by Mr. Swarr recording the dates received and from whom; one postmarked Bedford, Pennsylvania with a 3-cent stamp; one from Theo. Costello listing interest owed James Buchanan; and one from W. J. S. Stahr listing interest owed James Buchanan.

U.S. Ship Jamestown, Norfolk. Newspaper clipping describing Buchanan’s qualities for President and supporting him as a potential candidate. It references a letter the paper received from Buchanan.

Letter from James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr detailing financial affairs. He has placed their bonds and Miss Hetty’s in the Safety Deposit Building in Philadelphia and the certificates in the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. A new Power of Attorney is required for Lehigh Valley Railroad to continue to issue dividends to the Misses Pleasanton, although he would prefer that a new Trustee be appointed to whom their securities could be transferred. He will prepare the letter to Mr. Demund soon. He has asked Mr. Johnston to bid on the sleigh with a $50.00 limit; and asks that someone be at Mr. Trout’s to receive things as they arrive. Gollden envelope with stamp but no postmark addressed to H. B. Swarr, Esq., Lancaster, Pa. On front of envelope: Edward Y. Buchanan Rec’d July 14, 68; on back of envelope: Please buy the whip for me on Saturday if it does not go too high. Oxford Church, Philadelphia.
