Summary
The three volumes consist of one portfolio and two three-ring binders. The portfolio contains motor violation court papers dating from 1934-1937, with the name of the offender, violation, arresting officer, date, court term, and judgment. These are roughly in chronological order. The binders contain summaries of motor violation cases from January-June 1958 and July-October 1958. These are typed on notebook paper listing the name of the violator, arresting officer, and fine or sentence. In alphabetical order by surname of violator.

Summary
Five volumes contain the records of cases heard by Justices of the Peace Bruner B. Stevenson of Columbia, George Ravert, Esq. of Churchtown, and Richard S. Daveler of Marietta. Stevenson's volume is indexed alphabetically by the surname of the plaintiff. Summaries include the names of the plaintiff and defendant, complaint, court costs, and settlement. Ravert's volume contains both civil and criminal case records. Entered and filed with the Prothonotary's Office, 30 April 1940. Daveler's volumes include the name of the defendant, charge, summary of the case and outcome of the trial, court costs, and sentences. Entered chronologically by date of sentencing. Some records also have records of payment, etc. attached. All handwritten.
A writ of habeas corpus is a procedure for obtaining a judicial determination of the legality of an individual's custody. This collection includes petitions for writs of habeas corpus and the writs themselves, showing the names of petitioners, persons to be brought to court, nature of dispute or alleged crime, dates of writs and accompanying documents, names of judges, and names of persons that the writs are filed against. Petitioners include indentured servants, Freedom Seekers, free persons of color, convicted prisoners, those awaiting trial, relatives of prisoners, parties in child custody disputes, and relatives of army recruits and draftees.
