A Whimsical Petition to the Ohio Legislature, by John Smith
Description
A humorous tale about a petition in the form of a poem, presented to the Ohio Legislature, by John Smith to change his family name to Sea. Transcribed by Thomas Welsh. The date and source of the story is not identified.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Fair condition. No material tears or fraying. There is a smudge over a portion of the poem, and the heavily-inked title on the reverse side has bled through. This is on the reverse side of TW-A-XX-01(g).
