Cylindrical, Chinese export porcelain vase with handpainted decoration. There are two sections with detailed images of vignettes of people. May illustrate a story. separated by two brightly colored bands with foliate and curvilinear motifs. Upper and lower borders include similar designs.

Open scroll work on rectangular music stand; elaborate lyre-shaped pedal support with two pedals. Three massive legs with ten-faceted tapered legs. Sides of keyboard area scrolled with foliate carving. Around bottom is rope-like molding.

Notes
Jonas Chickering (1798-1853), whose firm made the piano, began his career as a cabinetmaker in Ipswich, New Hampshire. In 1818 at the age of twenty, he went to Boston and apprenticed himself in one of the town's cabinet shops.
Bookcase composed of two sections. Cabinet with glass doors at top and cabinet with wooden doors at bottom. Two glass doors have square mullions holding the panes. Doors give access to moveable shelves inside. Two doors at bottom of each have simple rectangular recessed panels.

In 1840 Joseph’s brother Eli Westcott Bailey, a New York City jeweler and importer hurt financially by the Panic of 1837, came to Philadelphia and entered the firm. The name continued as Bailey & Kitchen. When Joseph died, Eli became the senior partner of Bailey & Co. until he retired in 1867.

Swarr describing the restrictions on investment by law of the court; explaining that the court will only approve trust investments in securities that are explicitly enumerated by the legatee; noting that cash is not always in the hands of the executors; assuring him that the executors strive to give the maximum amount possible in the earliest time possible to the heirs of the ex-President; and hoping that they were not prevented from visiting Lancaster on the 5th by the condition of Harriet Lane Johnston’s health. Letter to Harriet Lane Johnston from H. B. Swarr explaining that he will transmit to Edward Young Buchanan her concerns about the cemetery lots and the railing but without her accompanying remarks; noting that the mistake regarding the railings has been rectified so that the railings and posts are now placed entirely within the borders of the estate lots selected by James Buchanan for his place of interment, and will not include the additional lots jointly purchased; and regretting having to relate the details but wanting her to have all the facts.
