Jonas Chickering (1798-1853), whose firm made the piano, began his career as a cabinetmaker in Ipswich, New Hampshire. In 1818 at the age of twenty, he went to Boston and apprenticed himself in one of the town's cabinet shops.

Originally Bailey & Co, the company was founded by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen. It was located at 136 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1840 Joseph’s brother Eli Westcott Bailey, a New York City jeweler and importer hurt financially by the Panic of 1837, came to Philadelphia and entered the firm. The name continued as Bailey & Kitchen. When Joseph died, Eli became the senior partner of Bailey & Co. until he retired in 1867.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sending her yarn via Mrs. Magraw, who is traveling with Robert to Philadelphia, inviting her to visit at Wheatland and mentioning that Colonel Hambright’s regiment was leaving for the West, not the South. With envelope addressed to Harriet in care of Rev. E. Y. Buchanan in Philadelphia. Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane rejoicing that she and Mrs. Roosevelt weathered a storm and arrived safely in New York; saying that Judge Black was supposed to come but might not emphasizing he was “mighty uncertain,” having invited Miss Slaymaker, Miss Old and Miss Grace to dine tomorrow; and announcing that Miss Blanche and the younger Miss Johnston invited him and Miss Hetty to a knitting party, which he will not attend. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane agreeable to her spending more time in New York; objecting to her seeing Mrs. Brown on her return because she would be “exposed to the company of a person” whose name he cannot mention “with Christian temper”; saying he will not go to Havana or Nassau; feeling sorry that he cannot tell what Harry Magraw proposes; commenting on newspaper accounts of the history of his administration; expressing happiness over hearing from Dr. Gwen, who is in prison; admonishing her not to address her letters to “Ex-President”; and enclosing two letters “from a crazy lover of yours,” which he had opened. With envelope addressed to Harriet at 836 Broadway, New York.
