Two carte de visite images glued to notebook paper. Photo at top is Lillie Moore, at bottom is Julia Moore. The two were sisters and teachers at the Mount Joy Soldiers' Orphans Home in the early 1870's. Their father, John Moore, was steward of the Mount Joy Soldiers' Orphans Home.

This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester recounting in humorous terms the romantic adventures of Lily’s father, regretting that she is not in Bedford with the others, pleading with her not to stay too long at West Point lest the President and Gov. Floyd become upset, relating the latest exploits of Mr. Henry, the Major, Gov. Powell, and Gov. Floyd, remembering a fond excursion to Mount Vernon and Mr. Schell’s gift of a stone bracelet to Harriet, returning the packet “money for papers,” the improvement in the health of Uncle, and the death of her pet Nettle. Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
