Description
Letter from son William to J. B. Henry expressing joy that he and Margaret are enjoying Italy and hopes to visit someday; had a family reunion in Washington with Aunt Lena, the girls, Frank, Sid, and Reg; met a friend at the Pittsburgh railroad station; in Cambridge to check of the small railroad shop; the drought has reduced the streams so much that the water is not suitable for the engines; hopes for a mild winter to aid in running the engines; Jean and Rob are settled in their apartment which Sid finds cozy; and is attending a “stag” party thrown by a good customer of the railroad and will be attended by “big bugs” such as the mayor. Envelope with postmarks but stamp removed addressed to Mr. J Buchanan Henry; c/o W. T. Turner & Co, Bankers, forwarded to Hotel Britannique, Città Italy. Wellsville, OH.

Henry thinking that James Buchanan Henry will be surprised to hear from Columbia; mentions Wheatland and Lititz – Wheatland is not used for growing flowers and Lititz makes the best pretzels; is happy to have nothing to do but thinks Boston is good for his health; is looking forward to his last semester in Boston but doesn’t know where he will be posted; had a grand reunion in Washington with Aunt Lena, Dorothy, Eleanor, Will, Reg, and Frank; scarlet fever forced Aunt Lena to move to a new place; visited Rob and Jean at their home; has not done any work and now kept indoors by a raging blizzard going into its third day; comments on the situation in Russian but thinks the czar can handle it; and wishes good luck to Margaret. Henry reporting that he spent some time with Uncle Frank on the Alabama shortly before it sailed; comments on Joe’s being mustered out of service; wonders if Lal has heard; says much is happening on the exchange; Will was there for a couple of days; Jessie Grange is engaged to Waller (a former member of the Maryland legislature), who deserves her; Elise will probably be next; and the pin from Tiffany’s arrived and has been cleaned “first rate.” [11/1902] Date from context.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson lamenting his boredom, with the only excitement being the arrival of a steamer; his longing for a letter from her, even though the boat with the letter had trouble docking; replies to news from her letter including news of Dody, little Esther’s passing, her father Will Buchanan’s and Bib Christy’s grief; wants her to handle some financial affairs; wanted to go to other islands but the weather is too hot; made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith of Watertown; hopes Mr. Gray is called to the church; Lollie Outerbridge reports that Mr. Cartwright is interim Pastor; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield and Terrie Roosevelt, the Murphys, Mr. Perrsett, Mr. Ball, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Magruder; the climate is warm and damp with little variation in temperature and many cloudy days; describes the island with its many plants, the results of a series of soundings showing that Bermuda is a coral island; is enamored by the variation of colors in the sea and of the scenery in general; hasn’t bathed in the harbor because of his rheumatism; sends greetings to her father, Aunt Sidney, Willie, Frank, his son, Miss Outerbridge; hopes to be home very soon.
