Autobiography of Thomas Welsh that was probably written in his late teens. This history details Thomas Welsh's work and schooling from age 8 through about age 16. Several people are mentioned, including an unnamed uncle. It appears to be the start of a longer document, except that the back of the page is an unrelated document. This is the first page of a 24 page package, apparently written variously in his late teens/early twenties, and subsequently bound together, probably by Thomas Welsh himself.

He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Reasonably good condition, with slight discoloration and some edge deterioration. Judging by the binding, this is page 4 of the packet. The first 2 pages are missing, and p. 3 is TW-A-XX-01(a), on the backside of this. The rest of the pages are bound upside down (relative to the first 4 pages), including TW-A-XX-01(d) and TW-A-XX-01(e), which are part of the same folio sheet as TW-A-XX-01(a) and TW-A-XX-01.

The beginning of an unfinished essay by Thomas Welsh about visiting the East Room of the White House (and evidently viewing Presidential portraits), juxtaposing the greatness of the Presidents with their deaths.

Two issues of the Weekly Journal, White Pigeon, Michigan. December 14, 1878 contains the obituary of an individual named James Buchanan (pg. 1) who was born August 14, 1807 and died November 28, 1878, and the wedding announcement of Ella Buchanan to John Gunn (p. 5). The January 18, 1879 edition has no reference of Buchanan in the paper, but has the name “Chas Buchanan” written on the top of the first page. [These Buchanans may be related through President Buchanan’s father.]

"A ten miles square, Lancaster Court-House being in the centre, and some part beyond it, actually surveyed 1786 and 1787 by me, William Reichenbach, in a manner as engineers use to take up special maps of countries, by compass and watch.
Of this square two large and more complete copies on royal paper, and in fair handwriting, with explanations and descriptions of the country, were sent to Congress when the inhabitants of Lancaster offered this place for a seat of the general government."
