Jonas Chickering (1798-1853), whose firm made the piano, began his career as a cabinetmaker in Ipswich, New Hampshire. In 1818 at the age of twenty, he went to Boston and apprenticed himself in one of the town's cabinet shops.
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr noting that Miss C. Pleasanton must ask Harriet Johnston for the Bible, as it is probably not the one drawn by James Buchanan Henry; asserting his right to distribute the canes as he sees fit; doubting that Mrs. Magaw will receive any more money at present; and mentioning receipt of the modified advertisement for the farm from Mr. Williams. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
