Letter to James Buchanan from Viers Bowie regretting accepting Colonel Leonard’s offer of trusteeship of his land because of the unstable situation in the sale of land during the Civil War and that the Leonards owned slaves, many of whom were being “corrupted” by Northern soldiers and the fear that if the Southerners come north to Washington, the area will become a battlefield; he concludes that he will do his duty no matter how distasteful; Leonard had intimated that Buchanan would promote him so that he would have money to pay the claim.
